November 2016 9 As we head towards winter, there are plenty of events this November making the most of the cooler weather. The island’s biggest annual motorcycle rally features a concert by renowned guitarist Bumblefoot which rounds-off the three-day gathering in style. Moving inside, we’re culturally spoilt for choice with two superb ballet performances coming to the island, from the Bolshoi and Suzhou Ballet Theatre, as well as Peter Pan at the Cultural Hall and Shakespeare at the British Club. On the nightlife scene, we can look forward to a range of international DJs hitting the decks while November also sees the start of the annual JJ’s Karaoke Idol competition which we’re helping to judge. You can get details of these and lots of other exciting activities to keep you entertained in our monthly Happenings section. Interviews this month include Lydia Martin, whose performing arts organisation offers scholarships to underprivileged youngsters, and we also chat to luminaries of the island’s food and beverage industry, keen to share their plans for the future. The year is coming to a close and with it the end of celebrations marking the 200th Anniversary of Bahraini-British diplomatic relations. We’re looking forward to high-profile visits from the Prince of Wales and new British Prime Minister Theresa May. To mark the occasion, we spoke to HE Simon Martin, the British Ambassador, as well as prominent Anglophiles for our special UK in Bahrain supplement. We’ve also rounded up information on the remaining celebratory events to conclude the bicentennial anniversary year in style. The annual Jewellery Arabia Exhibition takes place this month, one of the jewels of the island’s events calendar (pun intended). We chat to diamond expert Andrew Coxon, who expounds on his 007-like adventures and gives tips on choosing the perfect stone, while our Jewellery and Watches feature gives the lowdown on the ones to watch on the exhibition floor. If you’re thinking of splashing out on some baubles but wonder about the economic situation, our Finance and Insurance feature paints a somewhat rosier picture than might have been expected with local institutions weathering the storms and looking to future development. And, as always, we’ve also got news from the motoring and dining sectors in your guide to a great way of life. THE TEAM Publisher and Chairman George F. 32 November 2016 www.bahrainthismonth.com Theatre fans are in for a treat this month as UK-based S4K productions performs a rendition of JM Barrie’s classic story, Peter Pan. As a free-spirited and mischievous young boy who can fly and never grows up, Peter spends his never-ending childhood having adventures on the mystical island of Neverland as the leader of the Lost Boys. From the streets of Bloomsbury in London to Neverland and the deck of Captain Hook’s Jolly Roger, this is a colourful, fast-moving musical comedy adventure that features all the characters you know and love. Peter brings his new friends Wendy, John and Michael back to Neverland where they meet mermaids, Indian redskins and pirates. But when Wendy is captured by the fearsome pirate Captain Hook, Peter and his friends have to use all the cunning, trickery and bravery they have to save her. S4K creative director Julian Chenery explains how the show has already proved popular with audiences around the world: “Peter Pan is a terrific adventure story set in an imaginary far-away land where something new and exciting seems to happen every day. “Pan’s nemesis, Captain Hook, is one of literature’s great villains made memorable for his cavalier look, his fearsome hook and his fear of crocodiles; whereas his friends seem to be having fun every day. Most of all, Peter Pan is a story that reminds us we should never forget the child within us all, no matter how old we grow up to be!” The show will be performed twice daily. This is a perfect family adventure theatre production to enjoy and is suitable for ages three to 103. It costs BD15 and there is a family package of four tickets for BD50, as well as special offers for schools. Tickets are sold at Alosra supermarkets and Havajava Cafe inside Manazel. Functioning at the intersection between art, commerce and design, it is a community-oriented model which combines public art installations with a vendors’ market, bringing together creatives and businesses in the local area. This year, The Nest explores the ways and means culture is fused and integrated to celebrate the cultural fusions found within Bahrain.
