Meeting International Standards APPLIED SCIENCE UNIVERSITY Established in 2005, Applied Science University (ASU) is one of the leading private universities in the Kingdom providing undergraduate and postgraduate programmes to more than 3,000 students across disciplines, including law, political science, business, management, accounting and finance, computer science and arts. The university currently offers 12 undergraduate and three postgraduate programmes, all of which are approved by the Kingdom’s Ministry of Education, and the university uses a system of credit hours with each programme taking four years. ASU recognises the importance of internationalisation to its long-term future. The overall intention is that this is fully embedded into everything the establishment does which requires it to develop a multicultural community of students and staff; deliver curricula that provide students with the tools needed to thrive in the global marketplace; provide professional services that meet the needs of a culturally and geographically diverse body of students; and work in partnership to support and build capacity to further extend the university’s geographical associations. Importantly, internationalisation is driven by reciprocity, commitment and quality. To this end, ASU is establishing a College of Engineering in partnership with London South Bank University, which will offer the following dual-award programmes: B. Eng. (Hons) Architectural Design Engineering and B. Eng. (Hons) Civil and Construction Engineering, in the academic year 2017-18; B. Eng. (Hons) Electronics and Electrical Engineering and B. Eng. (Hons) Telecommunications and Networks Engineering, in the academic year 2018-19; and B. Eng. (Hons) Mechanical and Design Engineering in the academic year 2019-20. In order to be considered for entry to the programme, applicants are required to have a Bahraini or GCC Secondary School (Scientific) Certificate, or equivalent, with a minimum of 65 per cent GPA and a 60 per cent in mathematics and English language (competency equivalent to IELTS 4.5 or above). Candidates with a lower GPA may also be admitted subject to a satisfactory interview by the college. Progressing to the second year of the programme is subject to successfully passing all courses of the first year and demonstrated English competency equivalent to IELTS 6.0 or above. In addition, the university will offer two dual-award B.A. (Hons) programmes, which are affiliated with Cardiff Metropolitan University, in Management and Business Studies and Accounting and Finance. The university is currently working on further collaboration with London South Bank University to introduce a dual-award programme in Law. This will lead to LLB in Law (International). Further highlighting the university’s commitment to international excellence, 19 ASU academics have become Fellows of the UK’s Higher Education Academy (HEA), 18 as Fellows and one Senior Fellow. This makes ASU the first private university in Bahrain with HEA Fellows which provides international recognition of a commitment to professionalism in teaching and learning in higher education. A university spokesman says: “We have been looking at ways to encourage and recognise professional development in teaching. HEA Fellowship achieves this and it is also a big bonus that it is internationally recognised.” Further, the Annual Distinguished Seminar (ADS) series and Applied Science University Journal are two important flagships of ASU demonstrating its commitment to the highest level of research and development. The ADS series was established to help in creating a strong and sustainable research culture across the university and to increase the visibility of the research activities both nationally and internationally. Recipients, including such luminaries as Prof George Tovstiga, Prof Mark Batey and Prof Dana H Born, are world-leading scholars who help in defining the research agenda in their fields and have conducted a number of master-classes with ASU researchers. The ASU Journal publishes papers covering all aspects of applied sciences and in particular those core disciplines of the university, namely, business administration, art and computer science and law. The first issue of the first computing volume appeared in 2016 and the first issue of the law volume is due to appear in 2017. Others are in the pipeline. Call 17 728-777.
