Also, it doesn’t hurt that it boasts more than enough power to ensure you cruise along happily. The first thing you’ll notice is the aggressive front grille that gives an immediate allusion to the clout at your disposal. Flowing lines and seductive curves blend to create a design that is immediately recognisable. In fact, most of the gadgets and gizmos from the A8L and A7 have trickled down into this model and the only discernable difference to the uninitiated is the engine size. Talking of infotainment, make no bones about it; Audi means business with this model. Every A6 comes with Audi’s impressive MMI system that consists of a central screen controlled by a dial between the front seats. The screen size is perfect and there is an MMI rotary controller that can be ‘drawn on’ with your finger to enter letters and numbers. The rest of the equipment list is pretty comprehensive – there’s sat-nav, radio, Bluetooth, USB and AUX connections and voice control. In terms of cabin space and design, this model is among my personal favourites. Everything is clearly laid out and easy to use; in fact, connecting your phone takes mere seconds and setting the system up to stream music is simple. There are also plenty of cubbies and nooks to store your various bits and bobs. Tall people can rejoice as there is more than enough space to stretch out and sit comfortably …well, providing you’re just under six feet like me. The engine line-up for the new A6 includes an FSI and three TFSI engines with output ranging between 190bhp and 333bhp. All TFSI engines comply with the limits of the Euro 6 emission standard, and their CO2 emissions have been reduced by as much as 22 per cent. Combined with the new S-tronic transmission, the 35 TFSI consumes just 5.7-litres of fuel per 100kms. The cross-strut in the engine compartment and the cross-members behind the front and rear bumpers are made of aluminium sections. The front strut braces are highly integrated aluminium castings. Compared with comparable welded components of steel sheet, they save more than 10kg of weight. The integral sub frame behind the instrument panel, the rear shelf, the cross-member in the trunk, the front fenders, the doors, the bonnet and the trunk lid are made of aluminium panels. This lightweight construction concept yields a weight saving of roughly 15 per cent compared with conventional steel construction. Smooth handling and swift acceleration make this car an absolute delight to drive. During my afternoon I was able to put the A6 through its paces along a range of different settings. It glides like a hot knife through butter around corners and the steering is so responsive you only need to gently caress the wheel. The traction is also worth noting – confident and stable while taking a sharp bend, you know you’re in safe hands. The A6 is a classy ride that will ensure you get wherever you’re going in style.
