124 November 2016 www.bahrainthismonth.com movies Directed by: Tim Burton Starring: Eva Green, Asa Butterfield, Terence Stamp, Samuel L Jackson The Plot: When Jacob discovers clues to a mystery that spans different worlds and times, he finds a magical place known as Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. But the mystery and danger deepens as he gets to know the residents and learns about their special gifts – and their powerful enemies. Ultimately, Jacob discovers that only his own special ‘peculiarity’ can save his new friends. Worth Watching? Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is an entertaining watch that will thrill (and also frighten) younger watchers, but won’t live too long in the memory of adults. The film only briefly touches on each child and their particular peculiarities, never focusing on them long enough to give us a reason to be invested in their fate. Still, the film portrays a loving, heart-warming relationship between Jacob and his grandfather, Abe, which everyone with a grandparent can relate to. Visually, the cinematography is stunning and each frame features classic Burton flourishes. The script provides plenty of opportunity for humour, but with so many characters the story could have been streamlined. Film: Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children Rating: OOO VERDICT: A quirky, enjoyble, but overstuffed fantasy. Inferno Ron Howard returns to direct the latest bestseller in Dan Brown’s hugely popular Robert Langdon series, Inferno, which finds the famous symbologist (Tom Hanks) on a trail of clues tied to the great Dante himself. When Langdon wakes up in an Italian hospital with amnesia, he teams up with Sienna Brooks (Felicity Jones), a doctor he hopes will help him recover his memories. Together, they race across Europe and against the clock to stop a madman from unleashing a global virus that would wipe out half of the world’s population. Doctor Strange The latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Doctor Strange follows the story of the talented neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) who, after a tragic car accident, must put ego aside and learn the secrets of a hidden world of mysticism and alternate dimensions. Based in New York City’s Greenwich Village, Doctor Strange must act as an intermediary between the real world and what lies beyond, utilising a vast array of metaphysical abilities and artefacts to protect the world.
