February 2013 9 Dear Readers, There’s always an increased sense of purpose when we get to February as we look at the challenges in front of us from the perspective of a glass that is half full. Following on from its success last year as the Arab Capital of Culture, Manama is gearing up to celebrate being nominated as the Arab Capital of Tourism in 2013. The Ministry of Culture has been busy constructing a schedule of events that focuses on culture during the first quarter of the year. So, expect to be enthralled by a collection of Japanese dolls towards the end of the month at the National Museum. February is also World Cancer Day; the BFH Art Gallery presents the works of the much-acclaimed Iraqi artist, Rafa Nasiri, to raise funds for the Bahrain Cancer Society. Amwaj Islands is a destination of note this month as the marina is the kickoff point for the annual Sail Arabia tour. There’s also the monthly market, on February 23, to test our bargaining skills and to sample one of the many new dining venues at The Lagoon Park. For those looking for a surreal experience, then head down to Seef Mall and encounter a dinosaur, take a moonwalk or a stroll in the rain. This augmented reality experience comes courtesy of National Geographic. Our round-up of Valentine’s Day dining and entertainment options will not leave you short on choice about where to spend the evening with a loved one. In our annual telecom review, we find out from the likes of Batelco, Lightspeed Communications and Zain what they have in store for us. On the business front, Gulf Pharmacy’s Dr Khalid Al Awadhi counters recent media reports about the availability of counterfeit medicine in the Kingdom. Nabeel Al Ajaimi tells us about his farming experience, which dovetails with another major event this month — BIGS, where agribusiness is the centre of attention. The motoring section features a plethora of new vehicles now available in the Kingdom. Together with Graeme Newport, the general manager at Haddad Motors, we also take a peek at the range of AMG sports cars now adorning the Mercedes-Benz showroom. So, here’s to a month to enjoy the great way of life the Kingdom has to offer! The team Publisher and Chairman George F. Middleton Email: [email protected] Publishing Director David M. February 2013 23 www.bahrainthismonth.com Mark your calendars for a fun-filled year as your favourite annual cultural events are back, together with new ones to mark Manama as the ‘Arab Capital of Tourism’. The advent of February brings with it the start of a host of arts and cultural event that will take us through to the summer. From the Spring of Culture, the Bahrain International Music Festival and even the youth-orientated Ta’a Al Shabab, there will be plenty of options to keep us entertained. If that were not enough, Manama has been voted as the Arab Capital of Tourism for 2013. This follows on from the highly successful ‘Manama Capital of Culture’ series of events that were held last year. To celebrate the latest accolade, the Ministry of Culture (MOC) has lined up a host of exciting new activities aimed at the entire family. First up, starting on February 25, is an event that will allow Bahraini residents to travel in the footsteps of arguably the most renowned Arab traveller of all time. Ibn Battuta is the famed explorer who shied away from staying at home and left no stone unturned as he readily embraced all the nations he visited. The programmes arranged to retrace his travels range from exhibitions to forums, workshops, lectures and competitions. The ‘Manama: Arab Capital of Tourism’ schedule is split into four quarters, with each having a unique theme. The first quarter kicks off with ‘culture tourism’ and this is followed by ones covering sports, leisure and green tourism. In conjunction with this year-long programme, the MOC will launch a series of new initiatives all geared towards promoting the Kingdom as a tourist destination. These include the opening of the Tree of Life Visitors’ Centre, the continued redevelopment of the Bab Al Bahrain Souq and the revival of the Bahrain Hotel. The Bahrain Fine Arts Expo, the Heritage Exhibition and the Bahrain Summer Festival will also fall under the aegis of the MOC as our capital city prepares to show off its tourism assets and potential. The art of figurines Pushing boundaries with new innovations and bustling with ground-breaking technology, Japan is also a country rich in culture and art. For the enthusiast, avid collector or even the casual appreciator, the world of Japanese dolls is a fascinating one. This month the Japanese Embassy, in conjunction with the MOC, brings to the Kingdom a whole new perspective on dolls through a unique exhibition. Held from February 10 to March 2, the dolls featured come in all shapes and sizes and are made from all kinds of materials, representing spiritual, political and social ideals. Exhibition-goers will notice that the more striking versions mix a variety of elements — wood, a white lacquer made from ground oyster-shell and rich textiles. E Call 17 298-811. 26 February 2013 www.bahrainthismonth.com happeningsthismonth This month affords us the opportunity to examine ourselves and discover that leadership is within the grasp of each and every one of us. Dr Deepak Chopra, a renowned specialist in the field of human empowerment, will help us unlock our creative instincts and leadership potential at a one-day event on February 27. His ‘Soul of Leadership’ seminar teaches participants how to prepare for and take on the role of a leader. It is ideal for toplevel executives, young entrepreneurs and those looking to fasttrack their careers. “We hope this seminar will encourage and develop in people the desire to take on responsibilities not just at the workplace but also in their daily lives,” says Nigel Viegas, director of Bahrain Institute of Hospitality and Retail (BIHR), the event organiser. “Dr Chopra aims to cultivate those who will go on to become leaders in their respective fields. The programme takes concepts out of the box, so to speak, and into the real world, and in the process allows participants to realise their own potential.” The seminar will focus on the top ten fundamental principles that determine the characteristics seen in all great leaders. There is no ‘magic wand’, just some simple truths that have stood the test of time. “We trust that the younger attendees will use the information to become better leaders and contribute to the Kingdom’s growth in line with Vision 2030,” adds Nigel. “The seminar also offers organisations a chance to reward their employees and to motivate them to be more successful in their careers.” Taking a leadership role in any environment, whether at home or in the workplace, requires a conscious effort to do so. While it may be natural to some, we all have the capacity to lead. Inspire Yourself to Lead Dr Deepak Chopra When? February 27 | Event? Leadership seminar | Venue? Crowne Plaza Bahrain Hotel “The conscious decision to step out and become a leader is an important one for any person. While some might fail, many others succeed in their endeavour,” says Dr Chopra. “A successful leader easily garners the respect of those around them, pays attention to others, is a good listener, is aware of others’ needs and can create action plans for others to follow.” Realising your own potential means you can unlock the same in those around you; they will naturally turn to you for guidance and direction. “Only someone who can find wisdom in the midst of chaos will be remembered as a great leader,” adds Dr Chopra. “Wisdom is a single spark that permeates a whole forest. If the leader is willing to be that spark, others will see it in them. Seeking direction, they will value what a leader offers, which in turn lights the spark within themselves.” E Call 36 048-699 or 39 986-580. Emerging as a leader
28 February 2013 www.bahrainthismonth.com happeningsthismonth We have all probably heard of augmented reality; we can get a first-hand experience of this technology, which creates an interactive experience, at Seef Mall. Visitors will be able to see animals, both contemporary and extinct, come to life before their very eyes. If that doesn’t spark your interest, you should know that you can also witness weather systems and even the historic moonwalk without blasting off into outer space. How about that for a day at the mall? The pioneering spectacle, a first of its kind in Bahrain, is a result of the shopping centre hosting National Geographic’s outof-this-world augmented reality show. Launched mid-January, try splashing around with dolphins, encounter a ferocious dinosaur, pet a leopard, meet an astronaut and even face a storm in a virtual environment. The concept works by placing a huge digital screen and highpowered camera in front of a marker that is stuck to the ground. As people step onto the marker, the content comes alive on the large screen in front of them. This kind of immersive technology is great for learning and it is sure to bring joy not only to the kids, but also to adults. “We are delighted to partner with National Geographic to bring to life some of its exclusive content to Bahrain,” says Robert Addison, general manager of Seef Properties. “By combining technology and the natural world it offers an extraordinary experience.” The project marks the advent of unique experiences for the entire family at Seef Mall with many more exciting out-of-thebox activities lined up during the course of the year. “In mixing education with entertainment, National Geographic has always inspired with its innovative approach. This show is yet another way of getting the message across to people and reminding them of how they can get involved,” adds Robert. If you want to witness the mind-blowing journey through space and time, head down to the west wing of the mall from 10am to noon or between 4pm and 10pm. The exclusive event will run daily until mid April. Make sure to carry a camera to capture the moments as you get transported to an alternative realm. E Call 17 581-111 or follow #NatGeoSeef on Twitter. Ever wonder what it would be like to come face to face with a T-Rex? Then, head down to Seef Mall for a real-life, Jurassic Park experience. This month, in conjunction with its 15th anniversary, the initiative’s ‘One Billion Rising’ campaign is coming to town for a dance extravaganza. “In collaboration with many international groups, we will be creating a dancing revolution in an effort to realise the collective strength and solidarity across borders to end violence against women and girls,” says World Beat Fitness Center’s director and founder, Jane Goodwin. During the event, participants will learn the popular Break the Chains dance routine, which will be broken down into easy-to-learn steps. A bit of belly dancing, as well as some easy Nia technique and Yoga will also be on the day’s agenda. The V-Day movement now extends to almost 170 counties and the ‘One Billion Rising’ is its most ambitious campaign to date. “At BD8 for members and BD10 for non-members, you can help raise awareness for anti-violence groups around the world.” continues Jane. Visitors to the event, which is open to the general public, will be able to view a wide variety of consumer and industrial goods and services. More than 20,000 people are expected to attend the four-day event which will showcase innovative garden and landscaping technologies as well as the latest trends and equipment used within the industry. 40 February 2013 www.bahrainthismonth.com happeningsartsculture One of the most sought-after Arab painters of his generation comes to town for a worthy initiative, offering us an opportunity for a unique insight into his world. In Support of World Cancer Day, Rafa Nasiri showcases his latest works under the title ‘Being in the Moment’. The initiative between the Bahrain Cancer Society (BCS) and the Bahrain Financial Harbour (BFH) hopes to raise funds for charity in support of those afflicted by cancer. “This event is one in a series organised by the BCS over the month of February and part of the society’s continuous efforts to increase cancer awareness in the Kingdom,” says Dr Abdul Rahman Fakhro, president of the BCS. “Our aim is to both educate local residents about the risks of cancer and at the same time to raise funds to support our activities. World Cancer Day allows the entire world to unite in the fight against this global disease; it encourages the public to take a stand and to reduce premature deaths through a proactive approach to maintaining your health.” The man behind the canvas Rafa, a contemporary Iraqi painter, is known for his ‘cosmicscapes’ where he merges abstraction with Arabic calligraphy and other elements of his culture. The printmaker is well-known in both the Arab world and on the international stage for his rich artworks and distinctive style. During the last decade, his pieces have been inspired by poetry as varied as that of Al-Mutanabbi, Mahmoud Darwish and Etel Adnan. This fascination, coupled with a preoccupation with the element of time, has produced works that celebrate beauty, love and his homeland. “We are privileged to have the opportunity to exhibit the work of Rafa Nasiri, who is definitely one of the most celebrated in the Arab world and whose work has as much relevance today as it did years ago,” says Omar Al Mardi, BFH managing director. Since 1963, Rafa has held over 33 solo exhibitions in the Middle East, Europe and the Far East and has participated in numerous group exhibitions and international festivals. Among his many achievements over the years are a first prize at the Baghdad International Festival and an honour prize at the 4th International Graphics Biennale in Norway. He has also secured awards from the International Painting Exhibition in France and the International Summer Academy in Austria. The artist studied painting in Iraq and then went on to study graphic art in China and Portugal. Between 1974 and 2001 he worked at several professional studios in Salzburg, London, Assela, Baghdad and Amman. He has also taught painting, graphic design and art in Iraq, Jordan and Bahrain, in addition to giving lectures on his unique style around the world. E Call 17 233-080. When? February 1-15 Event? 42 February 2013 www.bahrainthismonth.com happeningsartsculture Islamic Geometry When? February 1-26 | Event? Exhibition | Venue? Al Riwaq Art Space Lulwa Al Homoud will showcase her latest works in an exhibition titled ‘The Language of Existence’. Each piece on display deconstructs Allah’s many beautiful names into patterns similar to Islamic geometry, using both Roman and Islamic numerals. She works by understanding that Arabic letters have proportions which represent mathematical codes. These are used to break letters into simpler lines and as a building block for geometrical designs. The end result is a computer-generated geometrical artwork, which has been recalibrated and, using a silkscreen, printed on paper. The artist treats us to her work derived from the most beautiful 99 names of Allah. Lulwa, from Riyadh, spent time at a school in London exploring calligraphy and Arab design. She has participated in and helped to curate the 2008 ‘Edge of Arabia’ exhibition at the SOAS Brunei Gallery. 44 February 2013 www.bahrainthismonth.com happeningsclubssocieties Fabric of a Nation To promote harmony across the Kingdom, the Ministry of Social Development launched the ‘Wehda Wahda’ (Let’s Unite) campaign. This national scheme seeks to kick-start social reconciliation among Bahrain’s youth after the unrest and to heal some of the divisions that have occurred over the past two years. The American Women’s Association (AWA), together with the ministry, aims to use a traditional handicraft to, in a literal sense, showcase the social fabric of the Kingdom. “A quilt can tell a story, commemorate an event, honour the dead, unite a community and reflect a culture,” says Jarna Jeet of the AWA and the project’s chairperson. “The idea was inspired by a ‘Friendship Quilt’ that was made last year to bring together Bahrain’s communities and society.” All Bahrainis, residents and other women’s associations are welcome to participate in the project and contribute pieces of cloth that represent the heritage, culture and future of the country. The AWA aims to collect a staggering 117 blocks to stitch together; the deadline for submitting entries is February 18. Each block will be 25 inches by 25 inches. “The project is important because there is a division in society after recent events and bringing women together towards a common goal to benefit the society will bring the sense of unity back to the community,” adds Jarna. In addition to building bridges between communities, AWA hopes to bring together underprivileged Bahraini women to teach them how to make quilts and enhance their skills. “Women are the backbone and the silent strength of society, so helping them will be helping the whole society,” Jarna comments. “A part of the project is therefore women’s empowerment; we want to teach economically disadvantaged women they can make a living out of making quilts.” To help the participants get started the society will be holding a series of workshops to train them in the techniques of stitching and quilting. The workshops, headed by Bana Al Bsat, Liz Gardner and Khadija Al Aradi will be held every Thursday from 10am to 1pm. To maximise the learning experience each session will be limited to 12 individuals. “We want each block of quilt, to represent an individual’s, or organisation’s, aesthetics and sense of purpose, while staying in line with the Bahrain theme,” notes Jarna. “The first block was received from the Bahrain Japan Business Friendship Society last month.” Other organisations who have signed up for the project include the Bahrain Women’s Society, Pakistani Women’s Association, Greek Consulate, Awal Women Society, Riffa Elderly Home, Young Ladies Association and St Christopher’s Cathedral. When the quilt is complete, the AWA aims to display the final version at either the Bahrain National Museum or the Bahrain National Theatre. E Call 38 884-924 or email [email protected]. It’s a craft that goes back to time immemorial when people simply wanted to keep warm. Today, quilting has become an art form, a means to express how we feel and think. When? February 1-18 | Event?
