42 February 2013 www.bahrainthismonth.com happeningsartsculture Islamic Geometry When? February 1-26 | Event? Exhibition | Venue? Al Riwaq Art Space Lulwa Al Homoud will showcase her latest works in an exhibition titled ‘The Language of Existence’. Each piece on display deconstructs Allah’s many beautiful names into patterns similar to Islamic geometry, using both Roman and Islamic numerals. She works by understanding that Arabic letters have proportions which represent mathematical codes. These are used to break letters into simpler lines and as a building block for geometrical designs. The end result is a computer-generated geometrical artwork, which has been recalibrated and, using a silkscreen, printed on paper. The artist treats us to her work derived from the most beautiful 99 names of Allah. Lulwa, from Riyadh, spent time at a school in London exploring calligraphy and Arab design. She has participated in and helped to curate the 2008 ‘Edge of Arabia’ exhibition at the SOAS Brunei Gallery. Her work was also chosen by Christie’s in April 2009 for their Middle East auction in Dubai. E Call 17 717-441. A Prestigious Showing A Day in a Life When? February1-28 | Event? Exhibition | Venue?
