46 February 2013 www.bahrainthismonth.com happeningskidsteens When? March 20-23 | Event? Theatre production | Venue? The British School of Bahrain West Side Story: a classic tale of love BSB students rehearsing their lines Scene from BSB’s Circle of Life production A musical that challenged the nature of theatre production 50 years ago is set for an outing by a local school, showcasing the talent that exists on our island. Nothing depicts American theatre quiet like a Broadway musical, and one particular show soars ahead of others as one of the greatest love stories of all time. Next month, Music and Stage for Kids (MASK) is putting on a whirlwind production of Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story. The modern musical adaptation, loosely based on William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, is set in New York and explores the lives of two youngsters from rival gangs, the Jets and Sharks. Tony (a former Jet) falls in love with Maria (the sister of the leader of the Sharks), leaving them to face the world they know alone, but together. With a spectacular musical score, stunning dance routines and strong dramatic scenes, West Side Story has proved to be an endearing hit with fans. MASK, part of the vibrant Academy of Performing Arts at The British School of Bahrain (BSB), is establishing for itself a growing reputation among theatre lovers on the island; their shows are characterised by a combination of energy, enthusiasm and professionalism. Most productions boast actors, singers and dancers from a wide variety of schools, cultures and backgrounds. The group’s last show Circle of Life, based on the Disney classic The Lion King, had over 160 performers ranging from ages six and above. The new production, though, with its more mature storyline and themes, dictates an older cast with members ranging in age from 12 to 18 years, together with four adult male roles. Under the direction of Danny Furness, Hayley Furness and Lydia Martin it promises to be another spectacular event. Danny is a music and drama specialist and is the head of music at BSB while his wife Hayley recently took up the post as head of drama at the school. Lydia has taught at BSB since 2011 and the producing team is joined by local choreographer Louise Chapman, from Ballare Studio. E Call 17 610-973. Forbidden Love
