100 February 2013 www.bahrainthismonth.com DAVID M. ROBERTSON Model Ford Escape Model year 2013 Engine type 2.5-litre engine Displacement 2,485 cc Horsepower 168 hp @ 6,000 rpm Torque 230 Nm @ 4,500 rpm Transmission six-speed automatic transmission Top speed 240 km/h A combination of clever technologies and features designed to make life easier are the standout features of this everpopular sports utility vehicle from Ford. If ever there was a sports utility vehicle (SUV) that epitomised the prefect 2.4 kids per family motoring option, it would be the Ford Escape. The most popular SUV in the brand’s stable, the Escape continues to be a winner for this American carmaker. The 2013 edition adds to the reputation with the addition of those little extras that endear a vehicle to its owner, such as the hands-free power lift-gate that allows quick and easy access to cargo with the kick of a foot. It’s these sorts of refinements that spell convenience, which is exactly what you need if you have a handful of children to look after at the same time. To activate this functionality you’ll need to have the Escape key fob with you, and you can use the same process to close the hatch as well. This versatility has always been an attraction for customers seeking a reliable and trustworthy vehicle, and Ford does not disappoint with the latest Escape. At first glance, the 2013 model appears to be slightly more compact than its predecessor; a quick check on the specifications reveals this to be the case. The new compact look, though, is indicative of what you will find inside the SUV as well. Complementing the new sleek design is an array of finishing touches that plays to the compactness of the SUV; the rear seats, for example, fold more easily than before and, with the lift of a handle, the seatback folds and retracts as the seat folds flat and clicks into position. For the driver, or front passenger, there’s added convenience with the SYNC with MyFord Touch, which allows for a smoother way to manage and control information. Voice commands, menus that can be accessed through controls on the steering wheel and touch screens all enhance the overall driving experience. Safety as always Keeping everyone on board safe and secure is accomplished through technologies such as Escape’s sensor-based blind spot information system (BLIS), with cross-traffic alert. When a vehicle is detected entering a blind spot, BLIS displays an alert in the side mirror, while cross-traffic alert warns the driver by detecting other vehicles approaching from the side of the SUV. Moreover, the rear-view mirror is divided so that 40 per cent of it serves as a video display. While reversing you can clearly see what is behind you on this screen.
