104 February 2013 www.bahrainthismonth.com motoring The fourth generation Toyota RAV4 sports utility vehicle (SUV) — the first crossover vehicle — offers a striking new design, ample rear space and a compelling array of standard features. “The 2013 RAV4 draws on the innovative heritage of the original model which started an industry trend and set a new benchmark in its segment,” says Ayman Shehadeh, Toyota and Lexus brand manager in Ebrahim K Kanoo. “With a more distinctive, sophisticated, dynamic and strong styling, this model will certainly be fun to drive.” Since its launch in 1994 more than 4.5 million vehicles have been sold in over 150 countries, clearly demonstrating the universal appeal of the ubiquitous SUV. Together with a refined interior, there is also a new dynamic torque control to enhance overall performance and deliver a smoother ride. “Toyota has produced a sportier driving experience characteristic of an SUV while building on the agile handling performance that is highly regarded in the current model,” adds Ayman. “We expect this model to be very successful in Bahrain, especially among the younger generation, as the improvements offer customers a more intuitive and engaging driving experience.” Design cues The front reflects the design goals at Toyota to provide a bright, intelligent, and dynamic expression that defines the model’s athletic presence and sophisticated strength. In a significant break with its heritage, the RAV4 has switched from its side-hinged rear door to a convenient roof-hinged liftgate, with the spare tyre now stored under the cargo floor. With soft-touch accents and driver-centric controls, the interior has a premium, sophisticated look. The dash panel and gauges all feature new ‘Clear Blue’ illumination for crisp visibility in most ambient light conditions, and a unified, coherent appearance at night. Driver and front passenger seats have a slim back which enhances rear-passenger knee room. They also feature 60/40 split/fold rear-row seats that recline several degrees to enhance passenger comfort. Complementing these are power side mirrors, power door locks and power windows and a rear window wiper. Optimising performance The 2013 RAV4 comes with retuned front and rear suspension systems, revised electric power steering, and a new dynamic torque control 4WD. The SUV is powered by a 2.5-litre, four-cylinder engine with Dual VVT-I technology delivering 180 hp at 6,000 rpm and 233 Nm of torque at 4,100 rpm.
