March 2014 7 Dear Readers, We are almost there. The 200th issue of Bahrain This Month is just one month away. The closer we get to this milestone the more I am beginning to feel a sense of accomplishment about what we have achieved over the past 18 years of publishing in the Kingdom. What excites me more, though, is what we could achieve in the years to come. In our Blipp This Month article, on page 69, we quite literally get an insight into the future. It was beyond my imagination when the first issue of the magazine was released in September 1997 that I could soon be wearing a pair of Google Glasses, in conjunction with the Blippar app, to recognise what I see around me. I am also excited about the big bash we are planning to celebrate the 200th issue. For those who remember, we caused quite a stir around town with our ‘Michael Jackson’ party to mark the 100th edition of Bahrain This Month. You can watch a video of this party at www.YouTube.com/RedHouseMarketing. Our cover this month records the visit of Eric Clapton to Bahrain, as part of the Spring of Culture schedule. The range and breadth of events lined up by the Ministry of Culture is an apt prelude to the 10th running of the Bahrain Grand Prix in early April. Musicians are in the spotlight this month. Andy Doherty talks us through his collection and passion for guitars; his current favourite is an Eric Clapton Fender Blackie. You can watch him play this guitar by ‘blipping’ page 75. A local musician making waves is Ala Ghawas, who has recently launched his fourth album. The subject of Jaguar Backseat Chat this month is Sh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa, the chief executive of Bahrain International Circuit. Sh Salman takes us for a trip around the F1 circuit and an excursion over the 4x4 adventure track. Our motoring section includes a test drive of the latest Dodge Durango; ‘blipp’ this article on page 102 to see some stunning aerial photography using a miniature helicam. The wonder of modern technology really has no limits! We also include features on home furnishing, air-conditioning and cosmetic treatment in yet another issue that demonstrates the great way of life that the Kingdom has to offer. 24 March 2014 www.bahrainthismonth.com happeningsthismonth The Kingdom gets a chance to see this member of rock and roll royalty in action at this year’s Spring of Culture festival. After much denial and widespread disbelief the rumour was finally put to rest when the Ministry of Culture and the Bahrain Economic Development Board (EDB) came out with the official announcement about the Eric Clapton concert. “We are proud to host Eric Clapton in Bahrain as part of the 9th Spring of Culture festival. This concert is part of a diverse programme of art, music and theatre that offers Bahrain residents and international visitors a range of cultural experiences,” says Leema Haddad, from EDB. “Eric Clapton is a legendary guitarist and the public interest in the concert has been remarkable.” The show marks the last leg of Clapton’s early 2014 tour that brings him to Bahrain via Japan, South-east Asia and Dubai. Known to the world as ‘Slowhand’, he enjoys the deserved status of a rock ‘God’ to guitarists around the world. Many fans in the country showed immense excitement at the news but the bleak prospect of actually acquiring a show ticket soon overshadowed it. The tickets to the show were priced at BD30 to BD50 but within just a few hours of going on sale were sold out. Many names, one soul The 18-time Grammy Award winner is no stranger to the shores of Bahrain, and has been photographed a few times during the Formula One season in the past. His affinity with the Middle East actually goes beyond the motorsport events that take place here. The song Layla, one of his most popular hits, is inspired by the classical poetry of Nizami Ganjavi and the Persian folk tales of Layla and Majnun. Part of the British Blues boom of the 60’s, Clapton’s journey in music began when his grandmother bought him an electric guitar when he was in his early teens. He was a guitarist in quite a few bands before he tasted chart success with the Yardbirds in the mid-60s. Their single, For Your Love, reached number two in the UK chart in 1964. From this point on, there was no looking back for him. A short stint with John Mayall’s Bluebreakers was followed by the birth of Cream in 1966. Fame wasn’t always a welcome friend, and that led Clapton to produce work under different names. He even worked with George Harrison under the names Delaney and Bonnie and wrote Layla while he was part of Derek and the Dominos. Numerous bands and collaborations later he released his first solo album, titled Eric Clapton, in 1970. The only triple inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, either as an individual or in a group, he performs live in Bahrain at Arad Fort on March 8. E Visit www.springofculture.org. 30 March 2014 www.bahrainthismonth.com happeningsthismonth We got to see the new cars, but only from a distance, as security was extremely tight while teams developed the new designs and technologies on their 2014 cars under a heavy veil of secrecy. We also got to experience the sound of the new turbocharged 1.6-litre V6 engines that all the teams will be using this year, instead of the mighty 2.4-litre V8s of previous years, thanks to new FIA regulations. And we can tell you — it’s different! Some argue for the better, some argue for the worse, but what is definitely true is that, while they are still as loud as ever, the pitch of the engine note is much lower, making it much easier on the ears than the high-pitched scream of before. Is it still as soul stirring and awe inspiring? That is up to you to decide. One thing we can definitely glean from the lap times being posted on the leaderboards during the testing is that this season is going to be a very different season to those of the last few years. Early indications are that the unbreakable dominance of the Red Bull cars doesn’t seem to be quite so unbreakable now. Red Bull, along with the other Renault-powered teams of Caterham, Torro Rosso and Lotus, has struggled with their new engines, with reliability issues and poor pace. They still have some time to try to overcome these issues, but it’s not a great start for these teams. On the other hand, a surprising set of results was posted by the Force India team, with new Force India driver Nico Hulkenberg topping the time sheets on the first day of testing. McLaren, Mercedes and Ferrari all seemed to be running well with their new engines, too. A landmark event As for the Bahrain GP itself, 2014 marks a decade since Bahrain first hosted the Formula One World Championship, and they’ve pulled out all the stops to make sure that it’s a memorable one. Aside from the stunning line-up of entertainment which you can read about on the following page, for the first time in the Bahrain F1 GP’s history, the event will be a night race, becoming only the second in the series after Singapore. The race is scheduled for a 6pm start, and this is also the start time for the qualifying sessions of the night before. There are a number of advantages to having a night race — aside from the added atmosphere it creates, there’s also the added bonus of cooler temperatures in the balmy Bahraini April evenings. And record crowds are expected too, due to the fact that the race’s start time is outside office hours, meaning more people will able to attend on the Sunday. All indications point to the 2014 Bahrain F1 GP being the most memorable in the race’s history, so make sure you don’t miss out! And only three-day ticket holders will be allowed into the post-race concerts, which you REALLY don’t want to miss. Get your tickets now! E Call 17 450-000 or visit www.bahraingp.com. 32 February 2014 www.bahrainthismonth.com happeningsthismonth Everyone take note! These acts will not be performing on Sunday after the race, as with previous years. For 2014, the format is different. On Friday April 4 Rabeh Saqer will be performing; the other two, Avicii and the Scorpions, will both be performing on Saturday April 5. Spread the word so no one misses out! DJ Avicii Two-time Grammy-nominated Swedish DJ Avicii is renowned for his spectacular live shows, bringing audiences to ecstatic moments of party bliss and “driving the crowd bonkers”, according to Rolling Stone magazine, who have also hailed Avicii as “one of the Princes of the contemporary renaissance of Electronic Dance Music”. After just three years of performing, Avicii rocketed to the number three position on DJ Mag’s yearly poll of the Top 100 DJs and has appeared on Forbes’ Most Powerful Artists Under 30 in 2013 and 2014. His first album, last year’s rue, was named Album of the Year by Elektro and The New York Times called him “savvy and timely” and “an artist carrying today — and tomorrow — on his shoulders”. Wake Me Up, the first single from the album, was number one in 81 countries, is triple platinum in the US, and the video for the track has been watched over 235 million times on YouTube alone. Hey Brother, his current single, is exploding on the radio and he has just launched Addicted to You internationally. The 24-year-old leads the next generation of electronic music producers to explode, propelling him into the ranks of superstar DJs who are able to perform to massive crowds. The Scorpions One of the greatest rock bands of all time, the band has sold millions of records worldwide throughout their nearly 50-year history in the music industry. The Scorpions are currently made up of Klaus Meine (lead vocals), Rudolf Schenker (guitar), Matthias Jabs (lead guitar), James Kottak (drums) and Pawel Maciwoda (bass). Some of their greatest hits include Rock You Like a Hurricane, Wind of Change, Still Loving You, Send Me An Angel and No One Like You. They formed in 1965 and have since sold more than 100 million records worldwide. Rabeh Saqer Rabeh will be the first of the three major concerts that will highlight the off-track entertainment and is scheduled to take to the stage for an 8pm start. 36 March 2014 www.bahrainthismonth.com happeningsthismonth Launched in 2008, Kelly Armatage Inc. is now the largest therapy and coaching company in Bahrain. “We all have learnt behaviours that are negative and positive. My mission is to guide individuals and companies to heal their inner programming to be great,” says Kelly. Kelly’s new set of mindset courses in the coming months cover mind programming through meditation, building motivation in careers, igniting relationships and supercharging physical health. Top Job, the ultimate Entrepreneurship and Career Training course, is being repeated on popular demand after four participants from an earlier batch got jobs and one got promoted soon after completion. Around 92 per cent of people responding to a survey by Kelly’s firm said they wanted to learn meditation. Her course Mind Wash is an in-depth study of various disciplines in meditation. Kelly explains that the mind is essentially like a jelly. “Studies show that the mind can have up to 70,000 thoughts per day. A weak mind is like a jelly, susceptible to thoughts of fear, anger and sadness, which can affect performance. An amazing way to create a strong mindset is through meditation. Regular meditation ensures the mind becomes like a rock, so that negative thoughts are bounced off,” she says. Before she turned to help others, Kelly undertook five years of in-depth study, reading over 500 self-help books and employing five of the world’s top coaches to work on her own mind and mental patterns. “My work is to help minds heal across age and gender. I know what it’s like to suffer within the mind. To know that I facilitated in giving somebody a map in order to take charge of their minds is very rewarding,” she notes. Each course starts at the end of March and is spread over four weeks of intense study, coaching and training. She is a firm believer in the power of group energy where everybody is involved in transforming together with common goals. This year will also see Kelly launching a couple of therapy techniques. Catering both for individuals and employees, the techniques aim to transform behaviour and negative emotions along the lines of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) and Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). One of the hundred people in the world to attend Robin Sharma’s Titan summit in Toronto last December, Kelly will work with Sharma over the next ten months on webinars. E Visit www.The2014mindset.com. Most of us are governed by our mind patterns rather than the other way round. As anyone who has strived to change finds out, bringing change within ourselves can be far more difficult than creating change around us. Coach and therapist, Kelly Armatage is in the business of facilitating change within individuals, families and corporate managers. Her simple mantra for people who want to change is this: do something that scares you for ten minutes every day. 42 February 2014 www.bahrainthismonth.com happeningsthismonth Gareth Richards After his first gig aboard the Malcom Hardee’s ‘The WibblyWobbly Boat’ in 2004, this self-confessed socially awkward boy became an instant star in the stand-up comedy scene. Three years after his debut, he was placed third in the Hackney Empire New Act of the Year contest and was runner-up in the new act competition run at the Newbury Comedy Festival. Gareth recognises that it may be contradictory to claim he is an introvert while delivering extempore performances to packed houses, however he quips he’s always been “socially a bit rubbish”. His brand of comedy has garnered many fans across the world and he hopes to do the same in Bahrain. The long list of accolades includes Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Award Best Newcomer nominee 2010, a place in the top 10 of Dave’s Funniest Joke of the Fringe, a nomination in the Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year Award, and winning a place as part of the Comedy Reserve. The Guardian has described his act as “A delightful hour of comedy” while Bruce Dessau of The Evening Standard calls him a “clever craftsman with a big future”. He made his big screen debut in 2009 in Ken Loach’s Looking For Eric – a hit feature film at the Cannes film festival where it was nominated for the prestigious Palme d’Or. Mick performed at the Edinburgh Comedy Festival in 2009 with The Comedy Final at the Gilded Balloon. He returned in 2010 with a brand-new show The Missing Chippendale (Body Issues) to great critical acclaim. She won the Holsten Pils ‘Fans of Comedy’ award and became equally popular with audiences and the British press. Her writing talents have been extensively displayed at Edinburgh Fringe shows. Sally-Anne’s confident persona and quick wit rapidly made her a regular face on the stages at Glastonbury Festival, and a keenly anticipated turn on the UK comedy circuit.
