42 February 2014 www.bahrainthismonth.com happeningsthismonth Gareth Richards After his first gig aboard the Malcom Hardee’s ‘The WibblyWobbly Boat’ in 2004, this self-confessed socially awkward boy became an instant star in the stand-up comedy scene. Three years after his debut, he was placed third in the Hackney Empire New Act of the Year contest and was runner-up in the new act competition run at the Newbury Comedy Festival. Gareth recognises that it may be contradictory to claim he is an introvert while delivering extempore performances to packed houses, however he quips he’s always been “socially a bit rubbish”. His brand of comedy has garnered many fans across the world and he hopes to do the same in Bahrain. The long list of accolades includes Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Award Best Newcomer nominee 2010, a place in the top 10 of Dave’s Funniest Joke of the Fringe, a nomination in the Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year Award, and winning a place as part of the Comedy Reserve. The Guardian has described his act as “A delightful hour of comedy” while Bruce Dessau of The Evening Standard calls him a “clever craftsman with a big future”. Mick Ferry A writer, presenter, actor, voice-over artist and a stand-up comedian, Mick Ferry provides a constant supply of unadulterated humour and entertainment. He’s featured on BBC One’s Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow as well as Comedy Blue and The Comedy Store for Comedy Central. He made his big screen debut in 2009 in Ken Loach’s Looking For Eric – a hit feature film at the Cannes film festival where it was nominated for the prestigious Palme d’Or. Mick performed at the Edinburgh Comedy Festival in 2009 with The Comedy Final at the Gilded Balloon. He returned in 2010 with a brand-new show The Missing Chippendale (Body Issues) to great critical acclaim. Sally-Anne Hayward Here’s an artist who has been famously described as someone who combines the things you shouldn’t like about your best friend’s mother with the sensibilities of Jack the Ripper. She won the Holsten Pils ‘Fans of Comedy’ award and became equally popular with audiences and the British press. Her writing talents have been extensively displayed at Edinburgh Fringe shows. Sally-Anne’s confident persona and quick wit rapidly made her a regular face on the stages at Glastonbury Festival, and a keenly anticipated turn on the UK comedy circuit. Her international gigs include Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, South Africa, America and most of Europe. She is ready to deliver a hilarious act in Bahrain this month. E Call 36 663-509.
