Bahrain This Month - March 2014

www.bahrainthismonth.com March 2014 129 Ankita Mamgain The Kingdom has tried a number of contemporary variations of Japanese cuisine. Adding a new twist on this culinary art form is this newly-opened restaurant. Most oriental philosophies revolve around the idea of creating the perfect balance. Whether it is within a person, the immediate surroundings or the food on the table, all strive to strike a balance. This sentiment forms the core of Ruka, Ramee Grand Hotel & Spa’s latest offering — a Japanese restaurant. Set within an opulent interior, the ambience is warm and welcoming. Boasting both traditional and contemporary elements, the large space includes a non-smoking section, an open-air smoking section, a bar and a theatrically styled kitchen. The venue transforms from a chic lounge to a fine dining restaurant effortlessly. The bar boasts a tall ice sculpture. From the china to the bamboo centrepieces imported from Thailand, each detail has been given meticulous care. Inspired by the Japanese word for a bright blue flower, the immediate thing you notice about the venue is its beauty. This is complemented by the views of the Seef skyline and Arabian Gulf. The balance continues into the menu as well. The menu establishes a middle ground with other cuisines, catering to a global palate. The kitchen uses a robata grill, which has its origins in Mexico, adding a distinct flavour to all the hot preparations. The cold section has a variety of maki and nigiri rolls, and fine cuts of sashimi. “We handpick the finest quality ingredients and present a fresh take on this popular cuisine that’s not available anywhere else in Bahrain,” says executive chef Jason Lynn. The team in the kitchen is led by chefs Naotaka and Raman, who take care of the hot and cold sections respectively. A taste of Japan My evening started with ebi shiromi zakana, which is rock shrimp tempura served with creamy lime and chilli sauce. This was accompanied by edamame, which is steamed soybeans with rock salt, and a lot more delicious than I expected. Another must-have is the letasu to karikari konbu no salada, an iceberg lettuce salad with wahu dressing, crispy konbu and pickled cucumber. And, of course, an old favourite — the California roll. Ruka gets the balance in flavours spot on with simple ingredients like crab, avocado, seaweed and rice. Something that’s worth a mention is the menu’s generous offerings for vegetarians. The restaurant caters for those who seldom get to eat anything more than cucumber maki at Japanese restaurants. Ruka is more than just new tastes. It’s a new style of fine dining, with wholesome portions shared by all at the table. E Call 17 111-971.
