Catch up on the latest works at this festival. Al Riwaq Art Space’s annual public arts festival returns this month. Alwan 338 follows the theme of ‘foundations’ this year, with a focus on the neighbourhood of Adliya. The festival is packed with a schedule of workshops, screenings, talks, food and music. The event offers a unique opportunity to interact with the newly commissioned works exhibited all over Adliya, made by local, regional, and international artists. Meet the team Two residential artists to be featured are Ben Wittner and Sascha Thoma. The pair founded and owns the graphic design studio Eps51. The studio develops visual concepts in print, and corporate and web design with a strong focus on typography and bilingual design. Also on the line-up is Daniel Rode. Born in Eutin, Germany, in 1971, Daniel first studied art and educational sciences at Greifswald University, where he later worked as an assistant professor for five years. From 2002 until 2006 he studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts, Dresden, graduating from the master class of Professor Monika Brandmeier. Visitors can catch the works of Ganzeer, a graphic designer since 2005, who has been involved in contemporary art since 2007. The artist has held exhibitions in Cairo, Germany, Holland, Poland, Italy, Brazil, USA, UAE and Amman. He is most known outside of the typical art sphere for his street art and activism efforts throughout 2011. The London Guardian described Ganzeer as a major player in an emerging “counter-culture art scene on the mainstream radar”. Al-Monitor.com placed him on a list of 50 people shaping the culture of the Middle East today. Art in America magazine has associated Ganzeer with today’s ‘New Realism’, a label attributed to an art form responding to a host of global challenges. Rheim Alkadhi, an artist who works with multiple media platforms, will also be participating. Her recent projects include the commissioned digital work, Picture City Body, for the New Museum’s art online programme and the object-based exhibition Here Is My Life Which I Devote to Learning About You at Darat al Funun in Amman. Other artists include Sudanese cartoonist Khalid Albaih and interdisciplinary artist Eva Frapiccini, who works primarily in photography and video installations.
