40 March 2014 www.bahrainthismonth.com happeningsthismonth The 2nd Special Needs Support Exhibition 2014 (SNSE), catering to the needs of the differently abled population of the country, will take place on May 11 and 12 at Gulf Hotel. Held under the patronage of HH Shaikh Khalid Bin Hamad Al Khalifa, it aims to draw attention to the challenges faced by children with special needs, and how professionals and society together can help them cope with these difficulties. Themed ‘Help Make Life Easier’, the event is a collective effort of ProVision Marketing and Events, the Ministry of Education (MoE), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and National Institute for the Disabled. The region has seen a rise in the number of children with mental, physical, visual, or hearing disabilities, and this year’s exhibition highlights the means to boosting a child’s selfesteem and confidence, encouraging them to accomplish tasks on their own. The exhibition highlights the latest support and learning tools for the specially abled, especially children. People can take part in conferences that give out information on how to overcome obstacles and tackle situations faced by children, along with a line-up of interactive and fun activities. The SNSE 2011 saw the presence of over 50 exhibitors and 2,000 visitors from across the world. SNSE 2014 features a line-up of interactive and fun activities including a cookery competition and short-film competition, and is set to take place on the May 8 and 9 respectively at the Bahrain City Centre. Exhibition and conference This year’s exhibition highlights the latest support and learning tools for people with special needs, especially for children. Parents and family members of children with disabilities are presented with the opportunity to learn more about the latest developments and techniques that can be adopted to help their children. Special conferences and workshops that will educate people on how to overcome difficulties and tackle situations faced by children with special needs will also be conducted. It aims to show how to enable special needs individuals to live independently and obtain their rights along with a respectable and better standard of living. Various competitions Special needs participants get a chance to demonstrate their culinary skills in a cooking competition. There are three categories — salads, sandwiches and desserts — and their creations will be judged by a special jury comprising some of the Kingdom’s best-known chefs. In addition to this, there’s a short-film competition. The competition is open only to Bahrainis, and films submitted should revolve around the subject of special needs. The entries will be received by ProVision, who will choose the best short films and present them before a panel of judges.
