Pearly White Smiles There are many types of teeth staining or discolouration, such as surface stains and soft deposits and stains that are part of the basic tooth structure. Surface stain occurs between the teeth and on the surfaces as dark brown areas. These are caused by strong discolouring agents like tea, coffee and tobacco. Ceram Dental Centre’s specialist dentist Dr Haidar H Alfayadh says, “We can manage this by a regular visit to the dentist. Some surface stains are not easy to remove due to micro cracks. These tiny fractures in the enamel require more than the normal cleaning methods, like bleaching, bonding and laser treatments,” Stains caused by plaque or calculus can be managed by scaling and polishing with airflow, while the type that grows to become part of the tooth structure proves to be harder to remove. This discolouration can be white, yellow, dark brown, brownish-grey or even blue-grey. The condition is caused by taking medication like tetracycline before eight years of age or during pregnancy. “Treatment depends on both the cause and the degree of discolouration,” the expert explains. Polishing is the simplest treatment method, while bleaching is used for mild and moderate tetracycline and fluoride stains. Advanced cases of teeth discolouration can be managed through different kinds of porcelain laminating veneers by lumineers, crowning and bonding of plastic material like composite.
