BTM July 2012 9 Dear Readers, As we head into the second half of the year, July can best be described as a month of two halves. The first two to three weeks brings closure to the previous six months; the school year ends and the events calendar draws to a temporary close as we prepare for our summer vacations. There’s still plenty to do, though, as the summer festival concludes with a performance of one of best-known and loved shows of the last century [ITALS] The Sound of Music. Our shopping malls are also a hive of activity with special promotions and events, such as those at Al A’ali Shopping Complex, to keep us entertained and out of the heat. The last ten days of July sees the start of the Holy Month of Ramadan. It’s a time for reflection and spending time with our families and friends, and this year promises to be no different. I know of many people who are taking their holidays early so as to be able to spend Ramadan here in the Kingdom. Let’s hope this occasion affords an opportunity for us to put behind the issues of the past 18 months and to build a better future for ourselves. Our annual review of offerings from hotels and restaurants for breaking fast at Iftar and subsequent ghagba social gatherings indicates we have as much choice this year as in the past, despite the Holy Month falling right in the centre of summer. There’s also a round-up of Ramadan promotions available at local supermarkets. We celebrate with the French as they mark Bastille Day; the French ambassador to the Kingdom, Christian Testot is optimistic for Bahrain’s future, noting there are many positives that make our island an attractive place for business within the region. For those who’d like to use the summer to ‘trim-down’, Karim Arafah talks about what has motivated him to become a fitness fanatic. The number 13 might be unlucky for some, but that venerable institution, which we know simply as ‘JJ’s’, celebrates its 13th anniversary over the three days of July 11-13. So, whatever you do to combat the summer heat, here’s to continuing to enjoy the great way of life the Kingdom has to offer for all of its residents. Ramadan Kareem! BTM July 2012 23 This year’s Bahrain Summer Festival still offers some exemplary musical performances, including one internationally-known musical loved by all. After a thriving first few weeks, the 2012 edition of the Bahrain Summer Festival continues this month with even more exciting events to enjoy. So if you missed out on some of the performances and activities that have already occurred, don’t despair as there is plenty of time for you to soak up some memorable performances. The children’s camps, workshops and programmes will continue every day of the month until July 15, with a diverse mix of free activities for youngsters to take part in. Puppetry, photography, LEGO, storytelling, dance and music camps are just some of the options available. Then there are the big numbers. The month kicks off with a hip hop evening from Qusai ‘Don Legend the Kamelion’ in collaboration with Bahraini talents Flipperachi, DJ Outlaw and Laiwa. This will be followed by renowned young Bahraini Hala Alturk showing off her phenomenal singing voice. Finally, this year’s line up is completed with the show we have all been waiting for — The Sound of Music. As the winner of the ‘Best Theatrical Production’ award in Dubai, it’s set to be a music event not to be missed. “The Sound of Music is all about family and music, which are two of the most important aspects of any society,” explains the director, John Payton. “It is such a special piece of work with celebrated songs — it is no wonder that our audiences come in their thousands time and time again. We are delighted to tour the show for the Bahrain Summer Festival and we fully recognise the honour of the invite to perform for the people of the Kingdom.” The musical is an emotional tale, following the true story of the Von Trapp family fleeing occupied Austria to seek sanctuary in Switzerland. “It provides rich dramatic scope for me, as the director, and working with children is always rewarding. When I took the production on, I decided that it should be as much about the innocence and wonder of the children as it was about the political aspects,” John says. The large-scale show involves a cast of over 30, a full orchestra and a crew of more than 20. “As the production calls for grandeur, so do the numbers of artists to tell the story and bring the production to life,” he continues. In addition to the cast’s talent, expect to be wowed by the special effects and scenery. LED screens, moving scenery and advanced lighting techniques will be used; however the director is confident that the music itself leads the production. The Ministry of Culture now also has an iPhone and iPad app listing all of the Bahrain Summer Festival events. Simply search for ‘Bahrain Culture’ on the iTunes store. The perfume design workshop will be split into a theoretical component and a practical component. The theoretical class will allow participants to have an understanding of the art of perfume design through interactive discussions and smelling sessions. As it focuses on fragrance composition, this class provides an important introduction to the practical class (perfume formulation) which follows as participants will be able to define the scents which attract them. The second class in this custom-designed workshop will introduce each participant to 32 raw materials from which personalised and individual perfumes will be developed. By the end of the workshop, participants will have manufactured different perfume samples and will be able to take home a 30ml sample of their own perfume. 26 July 2012 BTM happeningsthismonth Summer camp organisers have started to confirm visits to explore the new state-of-the-art Bahrain Science Center (BSC). The centre, which falls under the Bahrain Ministry of Social Development, will run workshops over the summer school holiday period with a wide range of activities that are intertwined with scientific topics. “We are delighted with the response so far,” says Khalid Ishaq, assistant undersecretary of community development. “Our goal is to help students build solid foundations for future academic studies and we look forward to welcome these groups.” Children will be spurred into motion with a series of fun-filled games and hands-on activities. From science shows, storytelling, craft to educational games, the centre has organised something for everyone through its interactive workshops. Attendees will enter a world of imagination, as BSC storytellers bring tales from around the world to life. The entertaining and exciting events are designed to develop essential life skills for young visitors. “Summer workshops not only supply strong support for the school curriculum but are a perfect summer activity, too. It will be a place of fun and provides a new destination for children to beat the summer heat,” Khalid continues. “BSC is not just about science; it is about fun, innovation, discoveries, invention, developing talents and life skills, and becoming a smart Bahraini citizen.” Currently operated and managed by MTE Studios, BSC is the first of its kind in the country and all the displays are designed to be educational. Schools in Bahrain started exploring the new centre by appointments prior to its official launch, with great success since it opened doors earlier this year. The centre is located in a colourful three-storey building along Riyadh Avenue in Isa Town, near the Manama/Salmabad intersection. Inside are six interactive exhibition galleries, an auditorium, four laboratories, a café and a shop. BSC aims to promote awareness of the importance of science and technology, complement the school curriculum, stimulate curiosity and innovation, and create a forum for public debate on science and technology issues. Additionally there are science shows, talks, debates, demonstrations, dissections and star gazing. In future, BSC will offer interschool competitions, excursions to places of scientific interest, camping trips and many other exciting activities. E Visit www.social.gov.bh. 34 July 2012 BTM happeningsartsculture Creativity is in abundance here in Bahrain; but, often in just a few mediums. One artist paves the way for a less prolific style of art that grabbed our attention. If you look at the Middle East closely, you will see the inspiration that surrounds us. Rich colours, historic traditions, opulent fabrics and desert sands are in abundance, providing a natural canvas to be admired. As many Bahrain-based artists transfer these elements into their works, only one does so through the medium of glass. Italian Giuse Maggi is perhaps the country’s only established glass artist. The art form, as she passionately describes, depicts one’s personality inexplicably well; however the process of creation must be understood. “Following an educational background in geology, I understand and appreciate the scientific, chemical and physical aspects of creating works from glass,” she explains. However, the medium was not something that the artist originally thought would blossom into such a lifestyle. “I began experimenting many years ago in 1990 as a means to pass the time while I lived in Saudi Arabia. I was fascinated by the way that the glass interacted with light and so resolved to master the technique,” she recalls. It was here that she developed her iconic and award-winning piece; the Flying Carpet. This is just one clear example of the way in which Giuse is enthused by her Arabian surroundings; specifically the calm and somewhat subdued nature of the region. Most of her pieces reflect the colours, shapes and textures of the sea, sand and palm trees. Never looking back, she has since showcased her work in several exhibitions in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Italy. Here in the Kingdom, the pieces have graced major art spaces including Albareh Art Gallery, the Cultural Hall, the National Museum and the Bahrain Arts Society. Presently, the artist opens up her in-house studio every week to teach this art form. “The process of creating one simple piece is a difficult and requires the utmost precision; it is a difficult technique to master, but beautiful results will be achieved. You must get the glass extremely hot in order to change its shape,” she says. “I create my artworks from large sheets of glass which are then melted into moulds in three large kilns.” An additional small furnace is used to melt glass and produce thin rods that are used in some of her most popular pieces. “Many of my pieces are made from recycled glass; I especially like the green colour of Perrier water bottles,” she says. Her work is diverse and ranges from small vases, to jewellery and to more sculptural installation pieces. Most recently she has started working with fibreglass; using the method to create 3D canvases, which can be enhanced further with paint. Glass artistry maybe one of the more complex branches of art, but through her workshops and courses, Giuse hopes to advance it into one day becoming a staple on Bahrain’s cultural scene. “To be an artist, it is not what you do but what you think. You must consider everything and understand the symmetry of it,” she advises. E Visit www.maggiglass.com or email [email protected]. Giuse Maggi A Pliable Artist When? July 1–September 2012 Event? 36 July 2012 BTM happeningsclubssocieties Meaningful Change Founded as a business forum for Bahraini and French business professionals in 2001, the Bahraini French Business Club (CAFB) had only around 90 members when Abdulla Juma took over as president five years ago. Since then, monthly networking dinners and talks by specialist speakers have fuelled interest and taken membership to around 145. Abdulla’s third term as CAFB president will be the most eventful if plans on the drawing board can be implemented during the course of this year. Having participated in two Economic Development Board road-shows in Paris over the last two years, he realises the need for more sustained efforts in promoting Bahrain as a friendly business destination abroad. “The EDB’s efforts are commendable, but there’s a need to do more than the EDB is doing. We’re trying to take these efforts further by direct liaison with the business community. By the middle of next year, CAFB will have evolved into a business council in a broader role that will see us providing services to the investor community. This includes advising investors on Bahraini laws, providing them with registration information and helping them with the early due diligence,” he says. This will translate into a permanent office with full-time staff and a dynamic website to guide prospective investors based in France. Discussions are on with the French Embassy and the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry to finalise the contours of the Bahrain-French Business Council. Abdulla is aware that more funds will have to be poured into the bigger establishment, for which he is mulling a number of options including raising corporate membership fees, attracting more members and hosting more business meetings, conferences and fund-raising events. Meanwhile, he’s planning a business delegation from Bahrain to the western region of France later this year. “We’re in touch with the local chamber of commerce there and plan to work together in exploring opportunities in mass transport system, manufacturing and the energy sector during our visit,” he says. Bahrain’s energy sector is buzzing with the Al Dur power and water project, where French global energy player GDF Suez has participated. Abdulla would like to see greater involvement of local companies when international projects of such magnitude are implemented. “For the local economy to benefit more, there should be 30 to 40 per cent involvement of local companies. Furthermore, if major infrastructure projects such as these are listed on the Bahrain stock exchange, it would contribute to the growth of local financial markets,” he notes. Tourism is another area where French experts can work with Bahrain to develop concepts for the Kingdom, he believes. Besides promoting economic and commercial ties with France, CAFB has forged cultural links with high profile events such as the French Week which occupies the pride of place on its calendar. “Efforts are now on to turn this event into a biennial one, though on a smaller scale. Meanwhile, the French Week, as we know it now, will continue to be held once every four years,” he says. More than a decade after its launch, the Bahraini French Business Club is headed for a significant makeover that will redefine its role in business affairs. Abdulla Juma

40 July 2012 BTM happeningssportsrecreation Alison Coldridge The summer heat and Ramadan all rolled into one; not exactly the best time of the year to be outdoors; so head for this annual indoor bowling event to let off some steam. Bowling is probably not an activity that many would deem a sport as such; it is generally played by families and friends for enjoyment purposes. It takes, though, some considerable skill to transform this casual pastime into a highly competitive professional arena. Fortunately, all that is required for one charitable tournament this month is a try-hard attitude and a willingness to have lots of fun! Bowlers from across not only the Kingdom but also the GCC are reuniting on the lanes to take part in a charity Ramadan tournament. “This is Bahrain’s second-biggest tournament of its type and it is now in its 19th edition. This annual event is held in honour of the late Faisal Abdulhameed, a key player for Al Najma Club and the national bowling team in the late 80s and 90s,” says event organiser, Mohammed Fulad. “Previous years have seen around 70 or 80 bowlers participate, and this year should be no different,” he advises. “The competition is an individual event, rather than a team game; each bowler has a trial, which includes three games. Every day of the tournament approximately 50-60 trials will take place. We invite all players, regardless of their age or expertise, to take part as handicap points will be given to bowlers according to their skill level.” But there is hope for those who do not do well during their first trial; all participants can attempt their three games as many times as they wish, as only the best three trials will be considered. The top 24 bowlers will advance to the final round in the hope of being crowned this year’s champion. The players finishing with the highest aggregate score will receive cash prizes in recognition of their success. “The total prize money allocated for this tournament is US$11,000. The overall champion will receive US$3,000 and there will also be prizes for top 24 bowlers in addition to daily prizes for each day’s high scores,” explains Mohammed. Anyone can enter into the tournament at any point; simply register at the Funland reception. Aside from providing family fun during the holy month, the tournament will additionally serve as a fund-raiser. Donations are raised through both personal and company sponsorship; the charity the funds will be given to has not yet been determined. Each participant will pay BD5 plus an additional BD5 for each trial undertaken. Mohammed urges all to come along; “We recommend all members of the public to watch parts (or all!) of this family event. Since I have been managing this competition for the past 11 years, I have seen numerous families take part and support one another; it’s a great activity to celebrate Ramadan with,” he says.
