BTM July 2012 23 This year’s Bahrain Summer Festival still offers some exemplary musical performances, including one internationally-known musical loved by all. After a thriving first few weeks, the 2012 edition of the Bahrain Summer Festival continues this month with even more exciting events to enjoy. So if you missed out on some of the performances and activities that have already occurred, don’t despair as there is plenty of time for you to soak up some memorable performances. The children’s camps, workshops and programmes will continue every day of the month until July 15, with a diverse mix of free activities for youngsters to take part in. Puppetry, photography, LEGO, storytelling, dance and music camps are just some of the options available. Then there are the big numbers. The month kicks off with a hip hop evening from Qusai ‘Don Legend the Kamelion’ in collaboration with Bahraini talents Flipperachi, DJ Outlaw and Laiwa. This will be followed by renowned young Bahraini Hala Alturk showing off her phenomenal singing voice. Finally, this year’s line up is completed with the show we have all been waiting for — The Sound of Music. As the winner of the ‘Best Theatrical Production’ award in Dubai, it’s set to be a music event not to be missed. “The Sound of Music is all about family and music, which are two of the most important aspects of any society,” explains the director, John Payton. “It is such a special piece of work with celebrated songs — it is no wonder that our audiences come in their thousands time and time again. We are delighted to tour the show for the Bahrain Summer Festival and we fully recognise the honour of the invite to perform for the people of the Kingdom.” The musical is an emotional tale, following the true story of the Von Trapp family fleeing occupied Austria to seek sanctuary in Switzerland. “It provides rich dramatic scope for me, as the director, and working with children is always rewarding. When I took the production on, I decided that it should be as much about the innocence and wonder of the children as it was about the political aspects,” John says. The large-scale show involves a cast of over 30, a full orchestra and a crew of more than 20. “As the production calls for grandeur, so do the numbers of artists to tell the story and bring the production to life,” he continues. In addition to the cast’s talent, expect to be wowed by the special effects and scenery. LED screens, moving scenery and advanced lighting techniques will be used; however the director is confident that the music itself leads the production.
