BTM July 2012 101 ELMA BARTHOLOMEW Choosing what goes into your meal and how you like it cooked might not be a new experience for Bahrain’s diners. Adding the fun quotient to this is a new Italian venue. I doubt this Kingdom will see a day when its people say “enough” to the rise of any more Italian restaurants. With such innovative concepts as those spotted in the recently-launched Vapiano, they can’t be blamed. Situated on the first floor of Bahrain City Centre, this casual eatery easily stands out amidst a flood of restaurants owing to a brand new concept of the chip card, which makes dining here a truly unique experience. Your adventure begins when you are presented with a card which you can use at any of their cooking stations or at the bar where you can pick up a menu. The lack of waiters should reveal that Vapiano is all about self-service. Based on your choice, join any of the stations — antipasti and pizza, salads or pasta. Once it’s your turn to place your order, it’s all between you and your Vapianisti. Choose whatever goes into the mix, beginning with the freshest of ingredients from the 11 kinds of pasta to the sauce varieties, which are all continually made right there in their ‘pasta manifattura’. Ask them to throw in your favourite veggies, add the spices of your choice and finish it with a round of cheese. When all is done, the chef simply swipes your card over a special reader onto which he adds the cost of your food and drinks. At this diner, it’s all about giving the customer the freedom to move around instead of the customary stiff dining experience. Grab a tray, glass and cutlery and head over to any of their dining areas to enjoy the dish prepared just the way you like it. Pizza lovers are given a buzzer to tell you when it is ready. This gives you a chance to relax while it is baked to perfection in their stone oven. Another interesting feature here is the provision of potted herbs like thyme and rosemary at each table for that final touch. Try not to miss out on their breads to wipe out that extra bit of sauce. If you aren’t in the mood for fizz, walk over to their bar (with your card) to pick up fruit juices or their signature coffees. While you’re there, you might as well get some authentic Italian dessert like the panna cotta served in a jar, or the crema di fragola, a personal favourite. Boasting a relaxed atmosphere, Mediterranean ease and southern joie de vivre, visiting this contemporary restaurant is like eating with good friends — no pressure, no dress code, no booking required. The long oak tables are inviting. In addition, the light-filled rooms, clear lines, chalk drawings and coloured highlights taking the form of red design elements contribute to a stylish and comfortable environment. You needn’t worry about someone hinting you to leave by passing you the receipt. At Vapiano, you decide when you leave. They simply redeem the card at the exit.
