March 2019 5 Wow, March is certainly a bumper month on our little island. In fact, there’s so much to do, we could barely fit it all into the extended Happenings section that covers more than 60 great events. It’s the return of the annual Spring of Culture with big-name stars, exhibitions, films, fun activities for kids, workshops, walks and more. You can download the full calendar of events at www.bahrainthismonth.com And, as if that wasn’t enough, we’re also looking forward to the three-day party that is the Gulf Air Bahrain F1 Grand Prix. We’ve got a round-up of all the trackside entertainment and details of the superstar DJ performances. Aside from these mega events, there are also exhibitions, nightlife and charity beanos to be enjoyed. You’ll find all the details in the Happenings section. Our interviewees this month are a diverse group. Janet Craven, of Bahrain Irish Society, tells us what’s in store for St Patrick’s Day weekend. Enas Asiri chats about her journey to become Bahrain’s only female insurance company boss. And Dr Dilip Malhotra’s tale of the big disappointment of his long career is one that will shock. The big feature this month is Buffets and Brunches – one of the highlights of island living. From special events for Paddy’s Day and Mother’s Day to the regular Friday feasts, we’ve got you covered with more than 40 options to choose from. And in the Table Hopping pages, we’ve included a mini round-up of the F1 brunch events so far announced. We’ll be updating that throughout the month on www.bahrainthismonth.com as more news reaches us. As always, we have our regular round-ups of news from the worlds of business and motoring and the Technology and Entertainment sections reveal the latest in gadgets, games, music, films and more. This month’s Out and About pages may come as a surprise to anyone who’s ever moaned about the lack of beaches on the island, as we’ve managed to round up several spots where you can get the sand between your toes. If you don’t fancy a trip to Bahrain’s coast, perhaps European jewel Montenegro is more your cup of tea. Find out in our travel pages. Resmi Al Kafaji describes Pathways as a word and an artistic concept. He explains that one often embarks on a journey not knowing where the final destination might be, much like how he begins his paintings. The monochromatic watercolour and mixed media pieces that make up Pathways reveal Al Kafaji’s gentle curiosity. In his artist statement, he describes how he often has no preconceived idea of how a completed work will look when he begins to paint. In an act of trusting surrender, he allows his brush to become ‘…a walking stick that leads him to where he was meant to arrive’. Al Kafaji’s works are in the collections of various museums in Italy, Jordan, Iraq and in private collections in Europe and the Middle East. LA FONTAINE CENTRE OF CONTEMPORARY ART Spark! is a multi-media exhibition by Ali Abayoglu, using unorthodox materials manipulated into objects of art. The exhibition will show how everyday materials can take on a new life and spark the imagination. Ali’s fascination with everyday objects goes back to his childhood when his father used to tell him the stories of where, by whom and how glass was first made. Those stories sparked within him an interest in seeing the beauty of glass, metal and other daily objects, influencing his trajectory as a multi-media sculptor. Where others see waste, Ali sees the potential for beauty. His sculptures represent the rebirth of what we take for granted and discard. AN ENCHANTING DANCE MARCH 15 TANGO LIVE LA FONTAINE CENTRE OF CONTEMPORARY ART Tango pioneers Maestra Gladys Fernández and Luis Signoretti have worked together over the years in developing tango in Italy and the Middle East.
