bahrainthismonth.com | OCTOBER 2026 INTERVIEW 22 A Legacy of Giving Daniel McRae, General Manager of the British Club Bahrain, tells us how he transformed personal grief into lasting support for a Thai community through compassion, trust and genuine friendship. What started as a holiday encounter for Mr. McRae in Thailand became the beginning of a deeply personal commitment to helping others. Following his father’s passing two years ago, he began searching for a meaningful way to give something back. That desire led him to a community in Phlapphla Chai, Buriram, where the generosity and community spirit of the local people immediately resonated with him. Their willingness to care for one another reminded him of his upbringing in the Highlands of Scotland as well as the warmth he has experienced in Bahrain, which he is now proud to call home. Practical Support At the centre of Mr. McRae’s efforts is a local temple which supports families, elderly residents and children throughout the surrounding community. His monthly contributions help the temple develop its buildings and facilities while providing practical assistance to those who need it most. The funding has helped improve the basic quality of life of local families and elderly people. It has also provided sporting equipment for children, encouraging them to spend time together outdoors. Mr. McRae says: “Mobile phones are rarely seen when I visit and it is great to see kids playing like I used to as a child.” What began with financial support soon developed into more direct involvement. During his visits, Mr. McRae has arranged meals for 300 children, spent time with elderly residents and helped distribute food parcels and clothing. He has also funded practical improvements, including rebuilding an elderly woman’s toilet. The community often marks his donations with banners and public displays of thanks. While the attention leaves him feeling slightly embarrassed, he is also proud to know that his support is contributing to people’s happiness. Visits With Purpose Mr. McRae tries to visit Thailand three times each year. His first journey after his father’s passing was partly an opportunity to grieve and regain a sense of purpose. Rather than simply sending money, he wanted to meet the people receiving it and see how the funds were being used.
