May 2019 9 It’s hard to believe that the Holy Month has come around again so quickly, but let me take this opportunity to wish each and every one of you Ramadan Kareem. In the spirit of the month, our main feature in this issue brings you details of more than 20 fabulous Iftar and Ghabga options to suit friends, families or business gatherings. We’ve also taken expert advice on both wellness and mindfulness during the period of fasting, to help you get the most from this special time. And, though Ramadan is almost upon us, there are season closing events to be enjoyed as well as various cultural activities taking place throughout the month. You’ll find all the details in our Happenings section, which is regularly updated online at www.bahrainthismonth.com Elsewhere this month, in the interview section, Egyptian Ambassador, HE Soha El Far, reflects on her time in the Kingdom and how impressed she has been, particularly by the number of women taking important roles in society. There are also words from hospitality veteran Abdul Rahim Al Sayed, who reflects on the state of the industry as he heads towards retirement. And author Rehan Khan tells of his journey from telecoms specialist to published author. Lucky Liz got the chance to try one of the region’s most exclusive dining experiences, she shares her thoughts with you in the dining section – no, of course I’m not even a little bit jealous. And Dick got behind the wheel of the latest offering from Mercedes – no, not jealous there either! In the Lifestyle section, we take a look at the millionaires’ playground St Barth’s and, by contrast, there’s a selection of Bahrain’s traditional coffee shops urging you to take a stroll through the souq and enjoy some authentic island atmosphere. As always, we have news from the worlds of motoring, business and dining and our regular round-ups of technology, films and music – in short, something for everyone in your monthly guide to a great way of life. BARISTA CREATIONS A new approach to milky coffee from the experts at Nespresso As three quarters of coffee drinkers globally enjoy a white coffee, Nespresso launches its latest blends, expertly crafted specifically to go with milk. The company has spent six years studying the interaction between coffee and milk to develop the Barista Creations milk coffee range for which the development team experimented with 18 coffee origins from around the world, focusing on the techniques of roasting and grinding, to perfect a milky coffee at home with the Nespresso milk machines. Behind the blend “The journey to find the perfectly balanced coffee with milk was inspired by professional baristas’ craftsmanship, and by questioning our consumers’ expectations and motivation to drink coffee with milk,” said Karsten Ranitzsch, Head of Coffee at Nespresso. “Our Coffee Experts therefore started by consulting consumers. Only after gaining a thorough understanding of it while taking the diversity of the responses into account, did we start to develop our new blends.” From 18 different coffee origins, around 20,000 cappuccinos were tested and over 120 coffee prototypes were produced. Through sophisticated trials, the experts pushed the boundaries of roasting and grinding in order to find the key attributes for a coffee blend to be drunk with milk. Barista Creations: the new permanent coffee range Those looking for bitterness, acidity, body, bold flavour and aromas in their cup of coffee with milk can find it all in this new range. To match every taste, each creation has been developed for its unique alchemy with milk. From a small cortado to larger cappuccinos, a variety of recipes can be created from each one. They can also be paired with plant-based milk alternatives, such as oat or soya milks. Original coffee range of Barista Creations • Chiaro (meaning ‘light’ in Italian) – inspired by Brooklyn baristas, Chiaro is for smooth and sweet coffee and milk recipes. With an ultra-light roast, it has sweet caramel and biscuit notes when milk is added. • Scuro (meaning ‘dark’ in Italian) – inspired by baristas in Melbourne, Scuro is for the perfect balance between milk and roasted coffee notes. Its profile is intense, roasted, and well balanced when milk is added. • Corto (meaning ‘short’ in Italian) – inspired by Spanish baristas, Corto has a powerful taste and a syrupy texture for recipes with a little touch of milk. The blend is very dark, spicy, intense roasted and smoky when drunk with milk. Ideal for a traditional Spanish cortado. Nespresso milk machines for all your milk coffee recipes The new permanent coffee range presents the perfect pairing for the Nespresso milk machines designed to bring out the textural experience of an indulgent milky coffee. The Nespresso Latissima machines offer the convenience of enjoying many excellent coffee and milk recipes at home at the simple touch of a button. With Nespresso’s coffee expertise and the venturi system of the machine, white coffee drinkers can get the right milk foam for their favourite cups. Any coffee lover can become a barista at home thanks to the Nespresso Creatista machines with which it becomes easy to create authentic top-quality Latte Art coffees thanks to Breville’s innovative, automatic and expert steam pipe. These versatile machines have adjustable settings for coffee volume, milk temperature and milk texture. Those looking to upgrade their coffee and milk experience can also purchase the New Limited Editions chocolates, for those extra indulgent coffee moments. To add to the luxury coffee experience, customers in Bahrain can now find all their Nespresso requirements at a new booth just opened at Seef Mall Muharraq. This brings the brand’s presence in the country to three outlets, with the Nespresso Boutique at Level 1, City Centre Bahrain and the Nespresso Booth at Gate 5, Seef Mall. Barista Creations coffee will be available from May 15, 2019 at Nespresso Boutique Level 1, City Centre Bahrain, Nespresso Booth, Gate 5, Seef Mall, Nespresso Booth, 1st floor, Seef Mall Muharraq, Customer Care Tollfree 80 001-999 or online at www.buynespresso.com/bh/en May 2019 19 www.bahrainthismonth.com advertorial

May 2019 33 www.bahrainthismonth.com HE Soha El Far this month INTERVIEWS View more info online Egyptian Ambassador, HE Soha El Far, has been in Bahrain for three years now, having previously been stationed in Argentina. And, in her time here, she tells Liz O’Reilly she has fallen in love with our little island and its people. Particularly conscious of the role women play in the Kingdom, she says: “I have enjoyed this posting very much. It’s my first experience of working in an Arab country and I was very impressed with the openness of the society. I am the first lady Egyptian Ambassador in the Gulf [she was also her country’s first female ambassador to Argentina] and being a woman has not inhibited my abilities in any way. “I particularly have admiration for the women I have encountered. I have never met a Bahraini woman who stays at home; if they don’t have a specific job, they work in charity or in other ways. Women have been contributing to the society here for a long time.” As a career diplomat since 1989, Her Excellency adds: “Something else that impressed me very much is the idea of the majlis. Here, people can go and meet the King and members of government, who will listen to their complaints and concerns. I have never seen that anywhere else and it is both refreshing and effective.” Her role in the Kingdom is to improve an already excellent working and trade relationship between Bahrain and Egypt and to serve the 23,000-strong Egyptian community who are found across fields such as law, medicine, education and banking. Current trade figures between the two countries stand at USD270 million per year – with aluminium going outwards from Bahrain and vegetables being a major import from Egypt. Her Excellency says: “This is low, but we are working on expanding it. The real challenge is the implementation of agreements that are already in place. “What’s also needed is for interchange between the business communities of our two countries so that Egyptians come to view Bahrain as a good investment prospect, not just for the Kingdom itself but also for its value as a gateway to the wider region and through its existing free trade agreements. Of course, we want Bahrainis to get to know Egypt in the same way.” One of the ways the embassy is working towards this is by encouraging trade delegations – there was a significant trade visitor exchange from Egypt to Bahrain in 2017 followed by one from Bahrain to Egypt in 2018. Egyptian business people regularly attend commercial conferences in the Kingdom with a view to expanding the trade relationship. Her Excellency adds that the two countries can also benefit from each other in terms of business practice. She says: “For example, Tamkeen; how it’s been set up and is working with SMES [small and medium enterprises] is an experience that’s worth studying and applying in some way.” And tourism, too, is on her radar. She explains that there are several Bahraini travel companies working to broaden their countrymen’s experience of Egypt which she hopes will lead to ever greater understanding and friendship between the two countries. Her Excellency concludes: “I feel that relations are improving in all sectors of society and Bahraini people have come to know about Egypt. Bahrain has been a great support to Egypt through the revolution – it is very rewarding to feel you are working in a place that supports and understands your country.” AN ADMIRING AMBASSADOR A Grown-up Ambition, p36 End of an Era, p34

34 May 2019 www.bahrainthismonth.com interview As he looks back at his career and ponders the possibility of retirement, Abdul Rahim reflects on his 40 years in the hotel industry. A former Bahrain international footballer, plucked from relative obscurity to receive training in the telecommunication and hospitality industries, Abdul Rahim was the second ever Bahraini national (after Mohamed Buzizi) to assume the position of general manager at a Manama hotel in 1981. “To be perfectly honest,” he states, “I entered the hotel field by mistake. I used to work for Cable & Wireless and had an assistant called Jaffer with whom I worked very closely.” Unbeknown to Abdul Rahim, Jaffer decided to apply on both their behalves for a hotel manager’s training position at the Delmon Hotel which, at that time, was one of the most luxurious outlets in Bahrain. Jaffer was never in the running for the advertised role but Abdul Rahim was chosen after a series of interviews. The selection process wasn’t the end of it though, since the British personnel manager expressed disapproval about Abdul Rahim’s dress sense. When the hotel owner, who happened to be the late Majid Zayani, heard about the rejection, he called Abdul Rahim to his office and offered him BD200 to purchase a brand new suit to solve the problem. “I was shy to accept this extremely kind gesture and therefore I initially refused his kind offer but eventually agreed to take the money on the understanding that it would be treated as a loan; deducted from my salary over several months,” he remembers. As a local sports celebrity at the time, Abdul Rahim did have the privilege of mixing with the likes of international World Cup footballers Pele and Santos, who happened to be on a Gulf tour soon after he started work at the Delmon Hotel. Naturally, he managed to convince them to stay at his establishment. Impressed by his initiative and seeing his future potential, Mr Zayani decided to send the young man to Cornell University in the USA for a hospitality management course at his own expense. On Abdul Rahim’s return, he was offered the position of assistant training manager at the hotel. He was then offered practical training at the Chelsea Holiday Inn, next to Harrods, in London; which was also owned by the Zayani family. After further training overseas, Abdul Rahim was again promoted to assistant general manager and, soon after, Rashid Zayani charged him to train his son for a career in the hotel industry. On his first day at work, the young novice arrived well-dressed and ‘raring to go’. “When he arrived on the second day dressed in jeans and a T-shirt, I had no option but to discipline him,” he recalls. To this day, when chairing meetings with hoteliers and explaining that his knowledge of the industry is more than just superficial, HE Zayed bin Rashid Al Zayani, Minister of Industry, Commerce & Tourism, often refers to this experience with Abdul Rahim Al Sayed, who gave him his first warning letter! “Over my four decades in the industry, I’ve trained Bahrainis as they have the right to be trained, in order to ensure them the opportunity of promotion,” he says. “I was once called to the police station due to a case lodged by one of my employees who was upset that I was forcing him to study. As far as I was concerned, it was his luck that I was trying to help him to improve himself. He eventually resigned though,” laughs Abdul Rahim. In conclusion, he reflects on the challenges faced by Bahrain’s tourism sector. Increased competition amongst local hotels combined with liberalisation in Saudi Arabia is not helping the local market situation and young hotel GMs have to be prepared for a tougher life. His major regret is that on his departure, only one Bahraini general manager will remain. Over my four decades in the industry, I’ve trained Bahrainis as they have the right to be trained in order to ensure them the opportunity of promotion” END OF AN ERA Meeting up with the affable, charming and indefatigable Abdul Rahim Al Sayed at his office in the Golden Tulip Hotel recently, provided an opportunity to delve into Bahrain’s history of hospitality. 36 May 2019 www.bahrainthismonth.com interview Please tell us a little about your Bahrain associations and do you still have connections to the Kingdom? My family and I lived in Bahrain from 2003 to 2006. Our kids were very young at the time and we had a really great experience of bringing them up in a family-friendly environment. I was working for one of the telecom companies at the time and I still have a lot of friends from my days in Bahrain, both related to work and others we met. What was your journey from Batelco to published author? Whilst in Bahrain I wrote my first film script, which received some interest but didn’t really move forward. At the time, a friend of mine suggested I write a novel as a more expressive medium. I didn’t really take it up until 2009 when my daughter, who was six at the time, asked me at breakfast: “Daddy what do you want to be when you grow up?“ At the time I was working as an executive in a firm and had real difficulty answering the question. But it sparked a desire to do what I had always wanted, since I was a nine-year-old – which was to become a writer. From 2009, I started taking the prospect of writing much more seriously. I still have a fulltime job – writers don’t get paid very much! Is this book your first literary venture? My first two fantasy novels were self-published. On the back of those I was approached by a UK publisher who wanted to work with me on a project – we discussed a couple of options and agreed on historical fiction. Are you now writing full-time? I wish! So, what’s the book about? The best way of describing A Tudor Turk is, it’s Mission Impossible in the 16th century. Like any MI story, something has been stolen, it needs to be recovered and time is running out. The novel takes us from Istanbul to Alexandria, Venice and London in 1591. What was your inspiration? Travelling to the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul and gazing upon the Staff of Moses and wondering how did it get here? The Staff plays a part in the novel. How did you go about researching it? I normally read a couple of academic books from the period to start with. This provides great context before I start working on my setting, characters and plot. How long did the whole process take from idea to publication? About 18 months. Where has it been published so far? It’s published from the UK but available globally. Any bookshop in the world can order it. Are you enjoying the promotion? We had the London launch at Waterstones on Gower Street a few weeks back. My publisher arranged for some actors to dress up as characters from the period. It was really very well received. Will there be a sequel? I’ve just finished it and sent it to my editor. Expect it to be out in February 2020.
