womanthismonth.com | SEPTEMBER 2026 HEALTH 80 The Lowdown on Salmon DNA Fit, Fresh & Fabulous Why is Salmon DNA suddenly everywhere? I don’t endorse every trend unless there is science behind it and I see results in my own practice. Celebrities such as Kim Kardashian have fuelled the hype, although K-beauty introduced the treatment years ago. In this case, I believe the hype is worth it because the results can be amazing. Is it really derived from salmon, and how does it work? Yes. Salmon DNA treatments often use PDRN or PN, which are derived from highly purified salmon DNA, usually salmon sperm DNA, and are used to support tissue repair and healing. Studies suggest they can improve skin elasticity, hydration and signs of photoageing. The world is moving away from overfilled or ‘pillow face’ results towards natural-looking faces and regenerative medicine. Salmon DNA works as a skin-quality booster rather than a volumising treatment. What skin concerns can it treat? It can help with fine lines, dull or dehydrated skin, acne scarring and photoaged skin. It can also be used for under-eye rejuvenation, as well as the neck and décolletage. Is it safe for people with fish or seafood allergies? A known fish or salmon allergy is a contraindication, so I advise caution or avoiding treatment. It should also be avoided with an active infection, during pregnancy or while breastfeeding due to limited safety data. Who is a good candidate? It can be a good option for someone looking to improve overall skin quality without adding facial volume. However, suitability needs to be assessed individually. What happens during treatment, and is there downtime? In my practice, I describe it as having zero downtime. Patients often come in for a lunchtime procedure and return to their day afterwards. I advise avoiding make-up, the gym or sauna for the rest of the day. When will you see results, and how many sessions are needed? Within one to two weeks, skin may feel more hydrated and look brighter. Improvements in texture, elasticity and fine lines can appear at three to six weeks, while collagen remodelling and regenerative effects are usually more apparent after two to three months. A typical protocol is three to four sessions, spaced two to four weeks apart. The best results are often seen one to three months after the final session, with maintenance every six to 12 months. Is Salmon DNA just a trend or does it have a place in skincare? Trends should never be followed blindly, particularly with aesthetic procedures. Salmon DNA has earned its place because it fits into the shift towards improving and regenerating the skin rather than simply changing facial volume. Salmon DNA is making waves in aesthetic medicine for its potential to improve skin quality and support regeneration.
