INTERVIEW bahrainthismonth.com | OCTOBER 2025 16 In May 2024, His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa visited China and, together with the Chinese President Xi Jinping, announced the establishment of a comprehensive strategic partnership between Bahrain and China. As the Chinese Ambassador to Bahrain, how do you assess the development of this partnership? Bahrain is a good friend and partner of China in the Gulf region. Over the 36 years of diplomatic relations, the two countries have consistently treated each other with sincerity and maintained friendly interactions, ensuring steady and healthy development of bilateral ties. In May 2024, President Xi Jinping and His Majesty King Hamad jointly announced the establishment of the comprehensive strategic partnership, which is a milestone in bilateral relations. Over the past year, both sides have actively implemented the consensus reached by the two heads of state and steadily advanced the partnership. Political mutual trust has deepened, with both sides firmly supporting each other on issues concerning core interests and major concerns. China supports and once again congratulates Bahrain on its election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. Economic cooperation has flourished, with bilateral trade reaching $2.305 billion in 2024, a year-on-year increase of 5.35 percent. Chinese cars are now widely seen on Bahraini streets, becoming the top choice for many families. Cultural exchanges are also thriving. Direct flights between Bahrain and China were launched in May 2024, and in June China introduced a unilateral visa-free policy for Bahraini citizens. Every month, Bahraini government officials and professionals travel to China for training and exchanges. The Confucius Institute at the University of Bahrain and private schools are expanding Chinese language teaching. Cultural events such as tourism exhibitions, painting displays and art performances have introduced Chinese traditions to Bahraini audiences. Looking ahead, China is ready to continue supporting Bahrain, pursuing common development and delivering tangible benefits through practical cooperation in multiple fields. The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit was recently held in Tianjin. Could you provide an overview of the Summit and its main achievements? It was the fifth time China hosted the event and the largest summit since the organisation’s founding. President Xi Jinping chaired the Council of Heads of State and the ‘SCO Plus’ meeting, with 23 foreign leaders and representatives of 10 international organisations. The Summit produced eight major outcomes, including the adoption of the SCO’s development strategy for the next decade, the decision to establish an SCO Development Bank, four new security cooperation centres, six cooperation platforms and six high-quality development action plans. Leaders also reaffirmed safeguarding the achievements of World War II, supported multilateral trade systems and advanced reforms within the SCO. This Summit was held at a pivotal moment, marked by unity and significant achievements, propelling the SCO into a new phase of highquality development. As a dialogue partner, The Chinese Ambassador to Bahrain, His Excellency Ni Ruchi, shares insights on the growing partnership between the two countries, wider regional cooperation and global challenges, reflecting Beijing’s stance on diplomacy, peace and international development. INTERVIEW Bahrain is welcome and encouraged to actively participate in its activities. During the ‘SCO Plus’ meeting, President Xi Jinping proposed the Global Governance Initiative, which has received strong international attention. What are its core principles, and what does China expect from it? The highlight of the Tianjin Summit was the Global Governance Initiative proposed by President Xi. It addresses today’s governance deficit by calling for sovereign equality, adherence to international law, multilateralism, a people-centred approach and action-oriented solutions. These five principles align with the UN Charter and provide a pathway for reforming global governance so it can more effectively respond to today’s challenges. 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the UN and the victory in World War II, making this initiative timely. It has already received strong support from world leaders and international organisations and is expected to gain broader recognition globally. This year marks the 80th Anniversary of the Victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. Beijing hosted a military parade on September 3. How do you evaluate the message conveyed to the world? September 3 is a day of remembrance for China and all peace-loving nations. The military parade in Beijing, attended by 61 foreign leaders and representatives, was a solemn occasion to honour history, cherish peace and look to the future. The commemorations reminded the world that humanity’s future is shared. Only by treating each other equally, coexisting harmoniously and supporting one another can countries ensure security and prevent the recurrence of tragedies. The parade highlighted China’s sacrifices and contributions during World War II, sending a clear message: China is committed to upholding the post-war order, defending fairness and justice and promoting peace. China will always remain a force for stability and progress and is ready to work with Bahrain and others to uphold these values. The conflict in Gaza continues, raising humanitarian concerns globally. What is China’s position on this issue? China’s position on the Palestinian issue has always been clear. We firmly stand with the Palestinian people, with justice and morality. Gaza belongs to the Palestinians and is an inseparable part of their territory. Without the implementation of the two-state solution, the cycle of violence will not end, and peace in the Middle East cannot be guaranteed. China calls for a comprehensive ceasefire with urgency, alleviation of the humanitarian crisis, adherence to the principle of ‘Palestinian governance by Palestinians’, support for Palestinian unity and the implementation of the two-state solution. Its expertise in sectors such as automotive engineering, renewable energy and healthcare has found common ground in Bahrain’s dynamic and rapidly developing market. German companies have established a significant presence in the Kingdom, contributing to sectors ranging from construction and logistics to industrial solutions, while Bahraini businesses benefit from access to Germany’s advanced technologies and know-how. Beyond commerce, cultural diplomacy has played a vital role in deepening ties. The Goethe-Institut and the German Embassy have been central to promoting language and cultural exchange, bringing Bahraini audiences closer to German art, literature and music. Similarly, Bahraini artists, students and professionals have found opportunities to engage with German institutions, strengthening mutual appreciation and dialogue. Political relations remain cordial and forward-looking, with regular high-level exchanges and collaborative initiatives in areas such as climate action and sustainable development. bahrainthismonth.com | OCTOBER 2025 INTERVIEW 22 Strengthening German-Bahraini Ties As Bahrain and Germany continue to deepen their longstanding relationship, the arrival of His Excellency Henning Simon, the newly appointed Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Kingdom of Bahrain, marks an exciting new chapter. In this exclusive interview with Bahrain This Month, Ambassador Simon shares his first impressions of the Kingdom and his diplomatic priorities. Excellency, congratulations on your appointment. What are your first impressions of Bahrain, and how do you envision your role in further strengthening German–Bahraini relations? I arrived exactly two weeks ago and my first impressions are really great. I am overwhelmed by Bahraini hospitality, friendliness and openness. I have already been invited to several Bahraini families who informed me about Bahraini culture, the economy and business. We also shared food together, including Machboos and Halwa, which I enjoyed very much. I have already visited Qal’at al-Bahrain and Bab Al Bahrain and seen the richness of Bahraini culture. My role will be to further strengthen this relationship, building on the warmth I have already experienced. What are the key priorities of your mission in Bahrain, both bilaterally and within the wider Gulf region? I see myself as somebody who is building bridges between Bahrain and Germany in all fields. Politically, Germany has always been represented at a high level at the IISS Manama Dialogue and this year again a senior representative will attend. Bahraini politicians also frequently travel to Germany, participating in the Munich Security Conference and other events. Economically, I want to foster relations, supporting both large German companies already present and smaller ones like Delivery Hero, which operates Talabat here. Culturally, I want to promote language, art and music, and finally, people-to-people contact, which I believe is the most important bridge of all. Thanks to Gulf Air we now have 10 direct flights per week between Manama and Frankfurt or Munich, making these ties even closer. How do you see opportunities for enhancing trade and investment between Bahrain and Germany? Bahrain is truly a gateway to the Gulf region. Its infrastructure and legal conditions are very attractive, especially in sectors where German companies excel such as engineering, logistics and technology. Companies like DHL already have their regional headquarters here. When I landed at the airport, the first thing I saw was DHL, which made me proud. I believe there is still untapped potential in Bahrain. The embassy can play a mediating role, opening doors for German businesses and providing a platform for connections. In your view, what advantages does Bahrain offer to German enterprises, and how might more German firms be encouraged to establish here? Bahrain offers excellent infrastructure, low taxes and a well-skilled labour force. German business leaders have already told me they are impressed with the Bahraini education system and the availability of qualified staff. On top of that, Bahrain is an air and shipping hub, which is crucial for Germany as a trading nation. There is also huge potential in digitalisation, artificial intelligence and renewable energy. At the embassy we even charge our BMW using solar panels, which is possible here thanks to the 350 days of sunshine every year. Green energy is an area where Bahrain and Germany can naturally cooperate. Are there plans to expand German language learning or academic cooperation with Bahraini institutions? Definitely. We already work closely with the University of Bahrain, offering German language courses, but we want to expand. There is strong demand from students and professionals. With the Bahraini German Friendship Society we are preparing to open new language courses soon.

bahrainthismonth.com | OCTOBER 2025 INTERVIEW 23 This is important because Germany is an ageing society, and we are seeking skilled workers in healthcare, engineering and other sectors. Our new government has introduced a Blue Card system to attract qualified professionals, but language skills are essential. At the same time, many Bahraini students can also study in English in Germany, particularly in medicine, engineering and business. The German Academic Exchange Service provides scholarships to support them. How can Germany, as a leader in advanced technologies, contribute to Bahrain’s innovative fintech industry? Germany has strong experience in banking, insurance and reinsurance. Hannover Re, the third largest reinsurance company in the world, has a regional office here. We are ready to cooperate with Bahrain in areas such as fintech and especially cyber security, which is crucial for financial technology. This is an area where Germany can contribute expertise and collaborate with Bahrain’s ambitious plans. What aspects of German culture would you most like to share with the Bahraini public during your tenure? Of course we will bring classical German culture like Beethoven and Bach, but I also want to share contemporary culture, including young and innovative artists from Berlin and other regions. We will participate in local events such as the Spring Festival, Jazz Festival and Oktoberfest. Culture is about bringing people together, whether through serious art or lively festivals with music and social gatherings. We want Bahrainis to enjoy the full spectrum of German culture. How do you see the Germany community in Bahrain’s contribution to strengthening ties between our two countries? There are around 500 German citizens living in Bahrain, working in business, culture and other sectors. Many are married to Bahrainis, creating strong family links. How does Bahrain fit into Germany’s broader regional strategy? Bahrain is an anchor of stability in the region. Germany participates in EU missions to stabilise the Red Sea area and contributes to combined maritime forces headquartered here in Bahrain. German soldiers are part of these operations, protecting shipping routes which are vital for energy supplies to Europe. The German government considers Bahrain a strategic partner, and that is why we will continue to participate in the Manama Dialogue at the highest level. On a personal note, what excites you most about living in Bahrain, and what experiences are you looking forward to exploring during your posting here? What excites me most is Bahrain’s religious and ethnic diversity. People of different cultures and religions live together openly and equally, which is very inspiring. It shows real humanity, and Bahrainis live that authentically. I want to explore the country’s cultural heritage more deeply, including its museums and archaeological sites. You recently took on the role as General Manager of Porsche Bahrain. How have you settled into life here and are you enjoying your time in the Kingdom so far? When I first arrived, I didn’t quite know what to expect, but Bahrain has been incredibly welcoming. That warmth made it easy for me to settle in quickly, and I can honestly say I’m enjoying every moment here. My family and friends who visit also love it, many of them have already returned three or four times, which speaks volumes about the charm of the Kingdom. As General Manager of Porsche Bahrain, what do you see as the biggest opportunities and challenges in the local automotive market today? Although the infrastructure is still developing, the Bahraini government has made clear commitments to supporting EV expansion, which presents a significant opportunity for Porsche. With the Taycan and the upcoming Macan Electric and the new electric models launching in 2026, we are well positioned to lead this shift. One of our advantages is that we install a charger in every customer’s home, eliminating range anxiety. Given Bahrain’s size, an electric Porsche with 450–500km of range per charge is an ideal match. And importantly, they still drive like true sports cars. Once you experience one, you won’t want to give it back. Porsche has an extensive and loyal fanbase worldwide. How would you describe the enthusiasm and customer base for the brand in Bahrain? That is the core of the Porsche experience! The brand is built on passion, and in Bahrain that passion is remarkable. We have an active Porsche Club here that meets around 20 times a year, and the excitement and camaraderie at each gathering is something truly special. With over 300 members, many of whom are deeply knowledgeable about Porsche’s range and heritage, it feels like one big family. How is Porsche leading the shift towards electric mobility, and how have these models been received in Bahrain? Porsche plays a critical role in the global transition to electric mobility, and in Bahrain the response has been extremely positive. Our all-electric Taycan has been especially well received, we’re already sold out of the 2026

The country’s capital is undoubtedly one of the most dynamic and vibrant cities in Europe, as popular for its superb dining experiences as it is for its shopping and entertainment. Berlin is also considered one of Europe’s top cultural destinations, home to numerous excellent art galleries and museums just waiting to be explored. Some of the best of which are located on Museum Island, a mustsee destination that alone can take days to explore. And after these attractions have closed, fun things to do at night include enjoying concerts by the renowned Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, perhaps taking in a performance by Berlin Opera, or simply wandering the always-interesting avenues and boulevards in the Mitte District, where you’ll find famous landmarks such as the Brandenburg Gate and the remains of the Berlin Wall. KOBLENZ & THE RHINE VALLEY If you do partake in a river cruise down the Rhine, you will at some point find yourself docked in the beautiful city of Koblenz. However you arrive, though, be sure to make your first stop the magnificent Deutsches Eck, or German Corner. It’s here you’ll witness one of the most incredible natural phenomena in the country – the meeting of the Rhine and Mosel rivers, overlooked by the huge Memorial to German Unity, an impressive equestrian statue of King Wilhelm I. Watching these two mighty rivers meet is a sight to behold. If you time it right, you can even enjoy a summer evening classical music concert at the same time. Great views of the German Corner and the two rivers can also be enjoyed by taking the Koblenz cable car up to spectacular Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. MUNICH The capital of the state of Bavaria, the home of Oktoberfest and one of Germany’s largest cities, Munich owes much of its popularity as a tourism destination to its location on the outer edge of the beautiful Bavarian Alps. Although not one of Germany’s oldest cities – its roots can be traced back to a settlement of monks pre-dating its official founding in 1158 – Munich has played a major role in shaping the country’s cultural and political make-up. The city’s rapid growth saw it develop into an important centre for religion, arts and trade. These days, no visitor can fail to notice the city’s many surviving churches, including the iconic cathedral and Munich’s most recognised building, the Frauenkirche. Another reason Munich has attained a place as one of Germany’s most popular tourist destinations is its historic city centre. It’s a delight to explore on foot, especially if visiting the city’s large open square, the Marienplatz. Here, you can explore delightful old architecture dating all the way back to medieval times, including the Old and New Town Halls. THE BLACK FOREST The beautiful Black Forest with its dark, densely-wooded hills is one of the most visited upland regions in all of Europe. Situated in the southwestern corner of Germany and extending 160km from Pforzheim in the north to Waldshut on the High Rhine in the south, it’s a hiker’s heaven. On the west side, it descends steeply to the Rhine, crossed by lush valleys, while on the east, it slopes more gently down to the upper Neckar and Danube valleys. Popular spots include Germany’s oldest ski area at Todtnau, the magnificent spa facilities of BadenBaden, and the attractive resort of Bad Liebenzell. NEUSCHWANSTEIN The quaint old town of Füssen, situated between the Ammergau and Allgäu Alps and a popular alpine resort and winter sports centre, is a good base from which to explore nearby Neuschwanstein Castle, one of Europe’s most famous (and picturesque) royal castles. King Ludwig II of Bavaria built this many-towered and battlementcovered fantasy fortress – the inspiration for Walt Disney’s famous theme park castles – from 186986. A variety of tour options are offered, including guided tours of the sumptuous interior taking in the Throne Room, the Singers’ Hall... and some of the country’s most spectacular views. HOHENZOLLERN CASTLE Hohenzollern Castle is one of the most impressive and beautiful castles in Germany. Perched on the top of a hill, you can see its silhouette against the skyline as you approach from any direction. One of the most intriguing things about the castle is the catacombs, or underground caves, where ammunition and gunpowder was stored. You can walk through this maze of caves and marvel at the effort it took to create them. The castle is also where the legend of the ‘white lady’ started – a ghost of a woman in white has been seen several times by various people. RAKOTZBRÜCKE This fairy-tale location, also known as Teufelsbrücke, the beautiful arched ‘Devil’s Bridge’, was built specifically to create a perfect circle when reflected in the water beneath it. It is 35m long and spans Rakotz Lake. The bridge features artificially-formed basalt columns selected and shipped from distant quarries. It was commissioned in 1860 ‘by the knight of the local town’. It’s within driving distance of Berlin and set in the equally stunning Azalea and Rhododendron Park Kromlau. It can be reached with a short walk from the park’s car park, making it super accessible to anyone.

Whilst the leather, brushed aluminium finish and panoramic roof might be new, striking the right balance between sporty and luxurious, the car just had this comforting familiarity to it with the iconic Audi design language and ergonomics. Kind of like getting a hug from your mum after being away for a while and instantly having that homely, comforting feeling. A Day Out in the Q5 I started my journey at Audi Centre Bahrain in Sitra, snaking my way through the highways up to Souq Al Baraha in Diyar Al Muharraq. Driving this peak of modern design through a traditional, cultural spot emphasised my feelings from earlier of the perfect marriage of old and the new. You’d think an SUV might feel out of place there, but the Q5 surprised me with how nimble it was. The steering was light and precise, especially with the redesigned steering wheel. From there, I got to stretch the Q5’s legs out properly and saw where it really came into its own. The 204 horsepower isn’t about aggressive power, but about smooth, confident delivery. It was more than enough for overtaking and it never felt short of breath. The suspension struck me most, firm enough to feel planted, yet comfortable enough to iron out the lumps and bumps of Bahrain’s roads. What really stood out was how relaxed I felt. The driver assistance systems; lane keep, adaptive cruise, cameras to name but a few, were all working in the background, but I never felt like they were taking over. Instead, they gave me the freedom to simply enjoy the drive, take in the scenery and even sneak a glance at the Q5’s reflection in the shop windows as we headed through the Um Al Hassam area. Everyday Practicality Between stops, I also noticed the little touches that make living with the Q5 so easy. There’s plenty of boot space for shopping bags, the climate control kept the car perfectly cool under the afternoon sun, and the virtual cockpit made it simple to keep track of everything without distraction. By the end of the day, I didn’t feel like I was returning a test car. I felt like I’d been driving something I could happily live with every day whilst also delivering that sense of adventure that is imperative in a new car. The new Audi Q5 doesn’t try too hard to impress with brute force or over-the-top tech. Instead, it delivers a stylish, comfortable and confident drive that fits Bahrain perfectly, equally at home cruising through a traditional souq as it is pulling up at a chic café. Scan to watch
