bahrainthismonth.com | NOVEMBER 2026 DIGITAL POV 111 The Hidden Cost of a Bad Redesign: Is Your Website at Risk? By the SOS Marketing Team Picture launch day. The new website looks sharp, the team is proud and the announcement goes out. Three weeks later, enquiries have slowed and nobody can say why. Could your redesign be quietly undoing years of hard work? And would you spot it before it showed up in your sales figures? For many businesses, the problem is not the design. It is everything the design quietly replaced. A website carries years of search rankings, links and customer trust, and none of it moves across automatically just because the pages look newer. What the numbers actually say Google itself warns that when a site moves to new page addresses, rankings may fluctuate while it recrawls and reindexes the pages, and that for a medium-sized site this can take a few weeks or more. That is when redirects are done properly. Without them, old pages simply drop out of view. Speed matters just as much. A study by Deloitte and 55, commissioned by Google, found that improving mobile load time by just 0.1 seconds lifted retail conversions by 8.4 percent and increased the number of lead generation visitors reaching a form submission page by 21.6 percent. In Bahrain, mobile is the main event. Mobile devices accounted for 67.13 percent of web traffic in September 2026, against 32.87 percent for desktop. If the new site is slower on a phone, most of your visitors will feel it. The overnight ranking drop Redesigns often change page addresses or restructure navigation. Without a permanent redirect from every old URL to its new home, search engines lose track of pages that used to rank. Google recommends keeping those redirects in place for at least a year. Skip this step and traffic built over years can fall sharply within days. Looks over conversion A beautiful site that does not guide visitors to act is not doing its job. Heavy images and animation, added without testing, slow the site down and hurt both visitors and rankings. And when technical SEO is skipped, from site structure to metadata to mobile usability, a site can look perfect to a visitor while being nearly invisible to search engines. Plan before you build The safest redesigns start with an audit, not a mood board. Which pages bring in enquiries? Which keywords already rank? Which external links point to which URLs? Answer those questions first, and the new site is built to protect what works rather than replace it by accident. What a good launch looks like The businesses that come out stronger bring search, content and conversion specialists in from day one, not just a designer. A wellmanaged launch is quiet: redirects tested, rankings steady, and customers noticing a cleaner site without losing the paths that used to bring them to you. How SOSM can help At SOS Marketing, we help businesses plan redesigns that protect their search visibility and turn more visitors into enquiries. Launch day should mark the start of better results, not the moment they start to slip, and we can help you make sure it does. Suggested visuals for this piece Note to editor / photo desk: production notes only, not for publication. Visual 1: A before and after split screen of a homepage, one side labelled with a strong search ranking and the other showing a dip, to show the risk of an unplanned redesign. Visual 2: A building under scaffolding or midrenovation, as a metaphor for rebuilding a website without losing what already stands underneath. Visual 3: A search results graphic showing a business listing sliding down in position, paired with a simple upward trend line for “the recovery that should have been avoided”.
