June 2014 115 www.bahrainthismonth.com movies MOVIE OF THE MONTH Non-Stop DIRECTED BY: Jaume Collet-Serra STARRING: Liam Neeson, Julianne Moore The Plot: During a transatlantic flight, US air marshal, Bill Marks (Neeson) receives text messages on his secure network phone explaining that a passenger will die every 20 minutes unless 150 million dollars is paid into an account. Though it is against protocol, Marks consults with another air marshal, Hammond, who is found to be smuggling cocaine and subsequently attacks Marks. The incident sees Marks kill Hammond exactly 20 minutes after receiving the text, making him the first victim. Some of the passengers and even the pilots believe that Marks is hijacking the plane, which provides a major obstacle for him to overcome in his quest to prevent any more murders. Worth Watching? Neeson’s heroes are always likeable and Bill Marks is no exception. As an alcoholic ex-policeman suffering from the loss of his young daughter to cancer, Marks is somewhat withdrawn; but in typical Liam Neeson style — as tough as they come. The film has great suspense and some wonderfully unforeseen twists that grip your attention throughout. Anchorman 2 The highly anticipated sequel to the ‘70s news broadcasting comedy, Anchorman 2 does not disappoint. The opening scenes will be familiar to fans of the first film. Stay with it and you’ll be rewarded with some hilariously awkward character interactions and highly inappropriate jokes. Snowpiercer A failed experiment to try and combat global warming results in an ice age. The only survivors are those who boarded a train. The theft of their children and the class system on the train leads to the poor rebelling and trying to take over. VERDICT: The storyline is impressive; the villain — not so much.
