Bahrain This Month - June 2013

88 June 2013 www.bahrainthismonth.com downtimecomputergames Injustice: Gods Among Us (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U) RATING: WHAT IS IT? Fighting games are often hard to do a really good job with; the story mode is often very weak or the combat can be confusing and irritating. Injustice: Gods Among Us not only excels in combat, but has a pretty awesome storyline too! The game opens a whole new chapter in the world of DC Superheroes; players take on the role of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Joker and many more classic characters from the DC universe and battle it out. GRAPHICS: Developers NetherRealm have created something that graphically feels like a Mortal Combat game — battle arenas are crafted spectacularly, and the characters still have that classic comic book feel to them! GAMEPLAY: In terms of gameplay, Injustice most certainly excels! It may be less violent than its predecessor Mortal Kombat, yet there’s still a dark and ominous undertone throughout the game. One of the things I found particularly impressive is how interactive the arenas are. There are a number of useable items in the stages, whether it be grenades in the Batcave, or the myriad of secret rooms you can launch opponents into in Arkham Asylum. The fighting is equally as thrilling; each character has a selection of special moves, which can be devastating and quite frankly awesome to watch! Donkey Kong Country Returns (3DS) Everyone’s favourite ape is back! The latest Donkey Kong game is as fun as ever, as Donkey and Diddy make their way through beaches, jungles and caves to get those bananas! While the 3D effects are impressive, they can also be slightly off-putting! LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins (Nintendo 3DS) Now on the 3DS, LEGO City Undercover feels as though it’s lost a lot of the charm that its Wii counterpart had a whole heap of! The gameplay isn’t as solid, and characters feel extremely two-dimensional and pretty contradictory for LEGO! Dead Island Riptide (Xbox 360, PS3 & PC) The latest in the Dead Island series is an improvement from the previous instalment; a lot of bugs have been fixed, yet still this series feels as though it’s lacking something. Combat is pretty fun, but sadly a poor script lets this zombie RPG down. GAME OF THE MONTH Be The Hero! There’s a lot of fun, and a lot of familiar faces in this month’s newest gaming releases! VERDICT: It’s rare for a fighting game to really stand out, but [ITALS] Injustice: Gods Among Us really delivers the goods, and where else can you see Batman and Superman fight each other?
