Bahrain This Month - June 2013

www.bahrainthismonth.com June 2013 87 music Daylight Jar RATING: WHAT’S THE STORY? It’s often been said that grunge died out a long time ago. But recently, there seems to have been a resurgence of the genre; bands like Soundgarden have released an awesome new album, and Alice in Chains are releasing a follow-up to 2009’s Black Gives Way to Blue. And this resurgence is also noticeable in the underground pop-punk scene. Here we have Daylight; based in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, the quartet have released their debut full-length ‘Jar’ which really shows so much promise. WORTH A LISTEN? Each track on the 12-track record is excellent in its own right. The second song, Life in a Jar, is by far one of the heaviest tracks on the album, with an opening riff which nods towards the likes of Alice in Chains and Soundgarden. In on it, the first song the band released from the album, encapsulates everything great about grunge. It’s melancholic yet catchy, with utilisation of the Nirvana-inspired ‘stop-start’ song structure. One track that particularly stood out was the seventh Youngest Daughter with its deeply sombre lyrics. Verdict: Jar is a spectacular album, and I would go as far to say that it is one of my favourite releases of the year! TOP TRACKS: Life in a Jar and In On It Turnstile Step 2 Rhythm East-coast punks Turnstile deliver an EP big on groove and even bigger on heaviness — in just under 20 minutes, this record produces bouncy riffs, punchy vocals and isn’t afraid to experiment with a lot of interesting ideas throughout! Like the title suggests, the band has stepped it up in all aspects. Must listen tracks inlude Canned Heat and Keep It Moving. A welcome breath of fresh air in the world of hardcore music, one thing that this group doesn't lack is sincerity. Rotting Out The Wrong Way The latest release from LA’s Rotting Out reveals a lot of crossover thrash influence. Some songs aren’t totally grounded, but with an abundance of punchy, fast and quite simply raw songs, the good outweighs the bad on this release! Terror Live By The Code Los Angeles hardcore-daddies Terror prove they’ve still got it with this blistering assault. These guys are on top form churning out heavy and hardhitting tracks that put most other hardcore bands to shame — this is how to stay at the top of your game!
