Bahrain This Month - June 2013

24 June 2013 happeningsthismonth www.bahrainthismonth.com Language Reflections Catch Michael Arcega’s exhibition at Al Riwaq Art Space this month titled Codeswitching. Michael will focus on the polyglot culture of Bahrain, investigating code switching, translations and mistranslations through the production of contemporary art works. The pieces will be in the form of sculpture, installation, videos, prints and water colours. “Code-switching is a linguistic term that describes the switching from one language to another, whether it’s from Arabic to English or from sculpture to painting,” says the artist. Michael’s work revolves largely around language, directly informed by research, material significance and the format of jokes. His subject matter deals with socio-political circumstances where power relations are unbalanced. His work has been exhibited at venues including the Berkeley Art Museum, the Museum of Craft and Folk Art and the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art. The exhibition will run until June 27.
