Primarily for children, it’s still great fun for adults as well. Music, laughter, songs, rhythms, rhymes and repetitions, We’re Going on a Bear Hunt will be an occasion for puppetry, paint, water, mud and a bear! Theatre director Sally Cookson’s hugely inventive production, set to Benji Bower’s quirky musical score, is a mischievous celebration of play. It utilises everyday objects and materials to capture the imagination and catapult young audiences into the world of Michael Rosen and illustrator Helen Oxenbury’s muchloved picture book. Join the intrepid family of adventurers and their musical dog through the swishy-swashy grass, the splashy-splashy river and the squelchy mud, in search of a bear. Expect plenty of funfilled interaction and a few surprises along the way. “This production takes everyone on the journey; not under, not over, oh no, through it. All in a funny, exuberant and loving way. It’s a show full of laughter, music, silliness and thrills that, I promise you, will excite and delight all young children. This is a must-go show,” says Michael Rosen. The show is presented by KW&NB and choreographed by a critically acclaimed production team that includes designer Katie Sykes, and music and lyrics by Bower. The lighting is taken care of by Tony Simpson, the sound is handled by Jason Barnes and Marc Parrett is the puppet designer. The cast features Duncan Foster as the dad, who created the character and has been playing it since the show began. He is even aiming to surpass Yul Brynner’s record of 4,600 performances of The King and I! The daughter is played by Rowena Lennon, son by Gareth Warren and the dog/musician by Ben Harrison. The show will also introduce Gavin Swift. Rosen’s multi-award winning bestselling book has sold over 3.5 million copies and was first published in 1989. Cookson is reputed as one of the most prolific creators of live family theatre. Her projects this year include Julia Donaldson’s Tiddler, a premiere of Varmints at Sadlers’ Wells and The Boy Who Cried Wolf at Bristol Old Vic.
