Bahrain This Month - January 2014

January 2014 61 www.bahrainthismonth.com Three decades ago, Bob Pike revolutionised trainer training with a focus on interaction and learners’ participation. This month, Bob brings his learning strategies to Bahrain. For organisations to stay relevant today they can no longer use the tried and tested learning methodologies of the last decade. In today’s globalised world defined by competition and change, approaches that worked in the past in now either irrelevant or inappropriate. The Trainers Meet Trainers (TMT) conference is designed around the theme ‘New Learning Strategies for the Workplace’. Participants, including training managers and training advisors, teaching professionals, HR managers, trainers and learning specialists, will gather to explore the best practices worldwide in the learning and development field. Bob Pike will lead a host of training experts in answering questions, such as what learning tool work now and how organisations can maximise productivity and performance with effective learning interventions. Founder and chairman of Creative Training Techniques Press, Bob has developed and implemented training programmes for businesses, governments and professionals since 1969. He believes that employees today face an information overload because they tend to equate learning with sharing information. “If there’s something we want to change, we think about how to get more information to people. In fact, most of the courses today are focused exclusively on sharing information. While sharing information is part of the learning process, it isn’t the learning process,” he says. In order to be effective, a training course needs to take the information and package it in a way that allows the learner to use it. “Learning happens when you present information in such a manner that the learner is able to see its relationship and context. Such an approach gives learners the freedom to explore the content and puts them in a position of discovery, which enhances learning greatly,” he adds. Bob will address the issue of ‘Getting to the Core of Training’ at the conference. “A successful training programme is always a work in progress and the training cycle isn’t complete without an evaluation of the training’s effectiveness,” he believes, and concedes that the explosive growth of IT has changed the way we learn. “It’s widely accepted that technology-led learning requires meaningful interactivity to improve learners’ skills and deliver results. What’s not well understood is that not all types of interactivity are equally effective. In fact, the least effective forms of interactivity are also some of the most popular because they are easy to implement using templates and wizards such as quizzes, interaction and assignments,” he says. Designing effective e-learning requires creativity and knowledge of basic design principles, but that’s what makes it interesting. E Call 39 417-787.
