Deadpool is a rip-roaringly hilarious take on a genre that is crying out for originality. It perfectly balances superhero action and humour, with stylish direction and snappy dialogue. The costumed wisecracker cuts a swathe through bad guys with a mixture of pistols and katanas, providing commentary along the way that breaks the fourth wall with side-splitting winks at the audience. The choreography is stylish and refreshing. While the villain could have been a bit more three-dimensional, Reynolds is outstanding. If you’re over 18 (despite the genre, this seriously is a film strictly for adults), then you owe it to yourself to see it. Film: Deadpool Rating:***** The Witch Set in New England circa 1630, The Witch follows a farmer who gets cast out of his colonial plantation and is forced to move his family to a remote plot of land on the edge of an ominous forest rumoured to be controlled by witches. Almost immediately, strange and unsettling things begin to happen. The animals turn violent, the crops fail and one of the children disappears, only to return seemingly possessed by an evil spirit. As suspicion and paranoia mount, everyone begins to point the finger at teenage daughter Thomasin. Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice This is the first big-screen meeting between DC’s greatest superheroes. Fearing the actions of ‘a god-like superhero’ left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day saviour, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. Meanwhile, with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.
