Bahrain This Month - April 2016

April 2016 107 www.bahrainthismonth.com Like some other motoring critics, I’m not quite sure whether to label the BMW X1 as a small SUV or a large hatchback. However, whichever way you choose to look at it, this model is an undeniably impressive feat of German engineering. Having already sold more than 740,000 units worldwide, the X1 is turning heads with its new design and sporting character. It boasts a number of class-leading features and leads the charge in terms of comfort, safety and infotainment. Among the items on the options list are fullLED headlights, dynamic damper control, the head-up display and the driving assistant plus system. Robust proportions, powerfully sculpted surfaces and design features typical of a Sports Activity Vehicle ensure that this model is immediately identifiable as a member of the BMW X family. The front is defined by the large, upright BMW kidney grille, three-section lower air intake and characteristic ‘four-eyed’ look formed by the twin circular headlights and fog lamps. Inside, the sophistication and refinement that BMW is known for is apparent. The X1 strikes a balance between driver focus and practical usage. The driver-focused cockpit is clearly laid out and standard equipment includes air conditioning, an audio system with USB and AUX-in sockets, and the iDrive operating system – with a 6.5-inch display integrated into the instrument panel in freestanding monitor form. The BMW X1 is based on the new front-wheel drive platform and is equipped with the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive-system to provide drivers with the ultimate driving experience, its makers say. When it comes to interior space, this model comes out on top, thanks to its increased proportions and available storage. There are two engines available to customers in the Middle East: BMW X1 sDrive20i, a 2.0litre four-cylinder petrol engine with 192bhp; and the xDrive25i, a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with 231bhp. The engines link up with either a six-speed manual gearbox or an eight-speed Steptronic unit, both of which are new developments. When it comes to the driving experience, it’s everything you would expect from this celebrated automaker. The ride is fluid, handling is smooth and the steering is responsive. The X1 also has plenty of get up and go, with impressive acceleration and firm breaking – ideal for the Kingdom’s roads. Remarkably, despite the slightly larger dimensions, it appears that the X1 has been on a diet – evident from the drastic weight reductions. An intelligent material mix combining high-strength steel and lightweight aluminium minimises weight. The bonnet, bumpers and many chassis components are made of aluminium. So, if you’re looking for a car that has character and capability, this might be the one for you. Call 17 750-750.
