bahrainthismonth.com | NOVEMBER 2026 EDUCATION 104 Take the first step: 17692917 Small Steps, Strong Foundations From purposeful play in Nursery to greater independence in Year 2, Quality Education School Bahrain’s Infant School helps children develop the skills and confidence to take on each new stage of learning. A question asked during play can open up a new idea. Taking turns helps children build friendships, while handling classroom resources develops coordination. At Quality Education School Bahrain (QES), these everyday experiences form part of a carefully planned educational journey that supports each child’s wellbeing and individual development. Early Discoveries In Nursery and Reception, children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) across seven connected areas of learning. Communication and Language, Physical Development and Personal, Social and Emotional Development provide the foundations. Through conversation, stories, mark-making and playful number activities, children develop the foundations for literacy and mathematics. Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design encourage investigation and selfexpression. At the school’s purpose-built campus in Saar, spaces for reading, movement and creative work give children opportunities to put their developing skills into practice. Purposeful Play Play is central to this approach, with teachers planning experiences around clear educational intentions. As children solve problems and interact, teachers observe closely, recognising when to let an exploration unfold and when guidance could take it further. A well-timed question, unfamiliar word or additional resource can extend a child’s thinking. Guided by Development Matters, teachers draw on these observations to recognise strengths and identify the next steps in learning. Their detailed knowledge of each child helps them plan the next steps and offer the right level of support and challenge. Growing Independence The move into Year 1 builds on the active, exploratory principles of the EYFS, gradually introducing more structure and independence. By Year 2, children engage with a broader subject curriculum while continuing to learn through enquiry, discussion and meaningful experiences. This continuity gives them time to consolidate early reading, writing and number knowledge, develop productive learning habits and approach academic expectations with confidence. Everyday Values QES has served families in Bahrain since 2003, and its commitment to building values is woven into everyday life in the Infant School. Children learn to persevere when faced with challenges and to make sure others feel welcome in their play. Kindness, collaboration and responsibility are practised each day within the school’s diverse international community.’ Family Partnerships Parents share what they know about their child’s interests, routines and experiences, while teachers share what they observe about the child’s learning and development at school. At QES, a close home–school partnership helps families and teachers build a fuller picture of each child and work together to support their growing confidence and independence.’ Prospective families can see the approach in action by visiting the Saar campus, meeting Infant School teachers and exploring the learning environment. www.qesbh.com Book a tour at
