Bahrain This Month - November 2026

bahrainthismonth.com | NOVEMBER 2026 HEALTHCARE 101 Growing Healthier Together From a light-hearted Australian challenge to a global health movement, Movember encourages men in Bahrain and beyond to talk openly and seek support. At BTM, even our logo is getting in on the action, sporting a moustache and a fresh coat of blue for November. A Hairy Beginning The story began in Melbourne in 2003, when friends Travis Garone and Luke Slattery wondered whether they could bring the moustache back into fashion. They persuaded 30 men to take up the challenge. Inspired by its potential to start conversations, the group formalised the campaign the following year, raising money for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. Movember gained Australian charity status in 2006 and officially launched in the UK, US, Canada and Spain in 2007. Its focus has since broadened to prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention, supporting research, prevention programmes and better care for men. The charity reports that supporters have funded more than AUD1.8 billion in work across these areas, turning a humorous visual symbol into a substantial source of investment. The moustache gives a serious subject an approachable starting point. Embarrassment, stigma and expectations of toughness can make it difficult for men to discuss physical symptoms or emotional distress. A conversation between colleagues, teammates or friends can help challenge that silence and encourage someone to seek advice. The campaign also reminds families that supporting men’s health is a shared responsibility. Its relevance spans generations. Testicular cancer particularly affects younger men, while prostate cancer risk increases with age. Mental health concerns can emerge at any stage, making Movember a useful prompt for fathers, sons, brothers and friends to look after themselves. Movember encourages men to understand their family history, discuss prostate cancer testing with their doctor and become familiar with what is normal for their testicles. Its mental health message is equally practical: stay connected, listen without judgement and help friends find professional support when they need it. Bahrain Takes Part In Bahrain, November’s health message is reflected in the Ministry of Health’s 2026 calendar, which designates November 1 to 30 as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. The Kingdom’s previous initiatives have combined education, fundraising and practical healthcare. At the University of Bahrain, a 2023 seminar brought prostate cancer and mental wellbeing into the same discussion, examining how stigma can discourage men from seeking care. RCSI Medical University of Bahrain has also organised on-site health screenings for more than 200 construction workers, alongside AECOM, NASS Corporation and KIMS Hospital. Students shared information about hypertension, diabetes and hand hygiene, taking preventative health advice directly to the workforce. Workplaces have contributed too. In November 2024, BENEFIT partnered with BDF Hospital on a blood donation campaign linked to Movember, encouraging employees to support community health. Anyone can participate without growing a moustache. Hosting a fundraising event, organising a group walk, checking in with a friend or booking a postponed appointment all offer practical ways to take part. Employers can invite a healthcare professional to speak, while families can make space for honest conversations about concerns that men might otherwise keep to themselves.
