www.bahrainthismonth.com November 2013 89 Nestled in the very heart of the island, the city of Riffa is the second largest in Bahrain and growing in popularity as a tourist and retail destination. Bahrain This Month takes a tour of the district. Steeped in history, Riffa offers family and friends the chance to explore traditional Bahraini culture and entertainment. Composed of the towns of East Riffa (Riffa Ash-Sharqui) and West Riffa (Riffa Al-Gharbi), this city provides a rich insight into diverse ways of life. You can find ancient settlements in East Riffa, now infused with the influences of various cultures, and the more modern sights in West Riffa, which is more residential. West Riffa is famous for its palaces as it is home to a majority of the Royal family, including Bahrain’s King, His Majesty Shaikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. A drive through the streets lined with lush greenery and roundabouts allows one to absorb the regal nature of the region defined by lavish homes. A tourist’s perspective As you drive from East to West, something not to be missed is the famous Clock Tower situated at the centre of West Riffa. Located on a roundabout, this landmark is a particularly splendid sight when lit up at night. East Riffa has more heritage and diversity and offers a lot to explore. The Shaikh Salman bin Ahmed Al Fateh Fort, known locally as the Riffa Fort, is the outstanding tourist highlight as it overlooks the valley. It served as the official residence of the ruling family on their arrival in Bahrain in 1783. Riffa was formerly the capital of the country, until 1869. The fort was of great strategic importance at the time, having been intended to shelter the population from potential attack by a sea invasion. It is therefore a significant part of Bahrain’s history. Built on the high ground overlooking the beautiful Hunainiyah Valley, this 18th century fort was restored in 1983 and consists of towers, elaborate chambers, a well and a mosque nearby. It also offers a wonderful view of the valley, with the golf course in the distance and the surrounding parks. From the fort, one can also drive towards Bahrain’s famous Tree of Life. Located opposite the Riffa Fort is the new Bahrain Defence Force (BDF) Military Museum which opened its doors earlier this year, in February, in celebration of the BDF’s 45th discoverbahrainrediscoveringriffa Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club Riffa Fort Rediscovering Riffa
