November 2013 73 www.bahrainthismonth.com Join top policymakers, HR managers and trainers as they put their heads together to explore the employment challenges faced by GCC graduates. For a region with a burgeoning young population, perhaps the biggest challenge before the GCC in the next decade will be finding jobs for the millions of its citizens looking to enter the labour market. According to recent World Bank projections, the GCC’s labour force will exceed 20.5 million by 2020, an increase of almost 30 per cent from the current estimated labour force of 15.6 million. These figures suggest that the region will need to generate hundreds of thousands of jobs annually. Against this background, the sixth HRD conference and exhibition is a timely event that will explore the challenges behind the unemployment of GCC graduates and try to work out solutions for the development of human capital in the region. “Human resource development in Bahrain and GCC has become a serious factor and international organisations have been highlighting this with reports on the number of university graduates every year and their job placements,” observes H.E. Jameel bin Mohammed Ali Humaidan, Bahrain’s labour minister. “We believe that human resources will be the basis for economic development in the Arab world. The conference is important for GCC countries and we expect that through discussions over the next three days with more than 30 speakers and moderators, we can come up with an action plan for human capital development.” “The first day will focus on the challenges facing university graduates as well as a debate between the old and new generation, involving various schools of thought and finding the middle ground between them,” says Conference chairman, Ahmed Al Banna. The second is devoted to finding solutions to the challenges discussed the previous day, with focus on the best practices of organisations with respect to career guidance, progression and succession planning. A CEO forum discussion on the best practices of career progression programme will close the second day.” On the third day, six workshops will run in English parallel to the conference. A workshop on ‘Career Progression’, with case studies, will be conducted by consultancy, Protiviti; another workshop on the ‘Power of Coaching and Mentoring’ will be held by Total Business Solution. Gary J. Casey, an Australian HR specialist, will guide the third workshop on the Australian experience in heading towards a ‘National Framework for Career Guidance’. Hanan Abdulkarim, from Honeywell in Saudi Arabia, will speak about her company’s experience in ‘Onboarding’ new employees while Dr Hanadi Al Hamli, a Kuwaiti HR advisor, will dwell on ‘Excellence in Career Development and Planning’. The local Bahraini experience will be shared by Mohammed Mahmood, president of Bahrain Society for Training & Development, who will talk about the ‘Path to Personal Success’. E Call 17 552-878.
