It’s that time of the year again when the festivities dictate your shopping list — it’s all about family, friends, gifts and celebration. As the Kingdom prepares for a merry Christmas and a spirited New Year’s Eve, the ladies at the American Women’s Association (AWA) host an event that encapsulates the season’s cheer. The popular Snowflake Craft Fair, to be held on November 30 at The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, brings together a variety of products made by local artists and vendors. Spread over the spacious Ambassador Ballroom, you can shop here from 11am to 4pm. For handicraft artists, designers and confectioners, the fair is a great opportunity to showcase their talent and offer their merchandise for sale. If you want to purchase something unique, then you will be spoilt for choice as most of which are handmade using natural materials. In addition to packaged sweets, show pieces, pottery and other holiday knick-knacks, the event will feature a crafts table and bake shop both selling items prepared and donated by AWA members. “We are really excited about this year’s fair. You can find a special souvenir for family, friends and colleagues while supporting local businesses, artists and designers,” says Diane Loney, chairperson of the Snowflake Craft Fair. There are not just great buys but the fare from the numerous cooking stations keeps your taste buds tantalised; live entertainment adds to the festive atmosphere. Look out for tables set up by local women and welfare organisations where you can donate for charity. The entry fee is 500 fils and children under five get in for free. Supporting local causes Seven women got together in 1974 to form a group with three goals in mind — charity, friendship and cultural understanding. AWA has come a long way since then and today is one of the most prestigious women-led associations in the country. These ladies are involved in a variety of activities ranging across travel, photography, crafts, design, dance and community service. The craft fair is one of their most anticipated annual attractions. First held over 32 years ago, it has grown from strength to strength over the years and has evolved into a major event on the island’s calendar. The association supports a number of different charities. Among these are the Special Olympics, the RIA Centre, the Cerebral Palsy Foundation, Bahrain Child Care Home, Bahrain Mobility International, Bahrain Red Crescent Society, the Aisha Yateem Centre for Family Counselling and the Mother and Child Welfare Society.
