Throughout November | Event? Japan film festival | Venue? Bahrain National Museum From Takashi Yamazaki to Kôichi Chigira, Bahrain gets the taste of the finest in Japanese cinema this month. The 2013 Japan Film Festival will offer movies throughout the month at the Bahrain National Museum. Organised by the Ministry of Culture in association with the Japanese Embassy, the festival will include Always: Sunset on Third Street, Brave Story and Hana No Ato. Scheduled for November 8, 20 and 27, these movies come with sub-titles and start at 8pm; entrance is free. E Call 17 298-777. The Bahrain Disabled Sports Federation (BDSF), in association with Batelco and Zayani Motors, presents this cultural show to help raise funds for physically challenged athletes. The event is held on November 21 at The Indian School Auditorium and begins at 7.30pm. Performing live will be S. Prabhudoss, an accomplished dancer who lost a leg following a train accident six years ago. Not deterred by this handicap, he continued to look at ways to survive and make a living with only one leg. The show also includes Bollywood playback singers Mohammed Sikander Ali, Rajalakshmy and Nishad. “The money we raise will support our athletes’ participation in international sports meetings as well as help in organising local events,” notes Brigadier Shaikh Ahmed Bin Salman Bin Daij Al Khalifa, BDSF Chairman. The entrance ticket, which doubles as a raffle ticket, is priced at BD1 and is available at all leading supermarkets in the Kingdom. Bahrain National Theatre Opera legend Placido Domingo returns to the Kingdom for an encore this month to mark Bahrain National Theatre’s first anniversary. Placido will be accompanied by the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz and the opera is conducted by Maestro Eugene Kohn. The 12-time Grammy winner brings wealth of experience from than 140 stage roles, a number unmatched by any other tenor in history and which includes demanding performances for Otello, Rigoletto and Simon Boccanegra. Known for the command and versatility of his voice, Placido has 100 recordings of complete operas, compilations of arias and duets, and crossover discs. From tenor to baritone, he displays a rare kind of mastery over his voice and has forged a surprisingly long and successful career through his combination of talent and tenacity. At 72 years old, he shows no signs of slowing down. His trademark phrase is, “If I rests, I rust.” In 2011, Domingo celebrated not only his 70th birthday but also his 50th anniversary of his debtut and the 40th anniversary of his Covent Garden debut.
