The condition sabotages your vascular system, leading to fluctuating blood sugar levels and production of toxins in the body. Soon, the curial supply network starts losing fluids, bringing down the level of nutrients in the organs and finally leading to loss of blood. The medical fraternity observes the World Diabetes Day each year on November 14 to raise awareness of this condition and how it affects your body. Dr Samer J Bashir, consultant opthalamologist at the Gulf Eye Centre, says eyes are one of the first casualties of the disease as they depend entirely on small and delicate blood vessels. Recurrent bleeding causes fibrosis to set in, which can lead to loss of sight. The centre is equipped with a wide spectrum of tools to fight back this problem, ranging from lasers, medicines and even surgery — although it’s used only in extreme cases. A retina specialist can assess the extent of damage long before the disease is established in the organ. “The notion that nothing has to be checked as long as vision is good can prove dangerous because blood vessels tend to be affected much earlier than the retina which gives plenty of time for counteractive measures to be implemented,” Dr Samer explains. “It’s very unfortunate that such a damaging concept is quite popular among the educated elite and even some doctors.” E Call 17 239-171 or visit www.gdsceye.com. A lifestyle disease that poses a lifelong peril for a major portion of our population doesn’t need to be the life-changer that it is often presented to be. Dr Samer J Bashir
