www.bahrainthismonth.com November 2013 153 ankita mamgain Come as you are for the island’s most anticipated singing contest. For all you bedroom Beyoncés, bath-tub Bublés and motorway Madonnas, here’s a chance to step out of the shadows, into the spotlight. One of Bahrain’s most popular karaoke venues, JJ’s Irish Restaurant and Pub returns with this annual tournament. Be assured there’s no Simon Cowell here, just some high-spirited revelry and an open mic. So flex your vocal chords and get ready for Bahrain’s very own Karaoke Idol! The weekly yodelling gets a little competitive with the BD1000 up for grabs as prize money. The winner takes BD700, runner up goes home with BD200 and the second runner up is awarded BD100. JJ’s hopes to uncover some true talents during the tournament who can impress the judges and amaze the audience. They go through to the finals for their chance for fame and of course the money! The contest kicks off with the first round on November 5 and will have six rounds in total, taking place every Tuesday night, till December 10. Two finalists will then meet head-on in the grand finale on December 17, where they will sing their hearts out for a chance for the top prize. The contestants face a panel of professional judges who will comment upon and rate each performance. However, one doesn’t need to worry; it’s all about having fun with everyone who participates earning a free drink! This year the organisers have added an extra bonus. A people’s choice award will be made via Facebook votes from the previous weeks’ runner-up, and one lucky voter will win a trip to Dubai. Sing-along sensation A favourite bar activity, especially after a couple of drinks, karaoke is enjoyable for all involved — the contestants and audience alike. According to the organisers, Bahrain’s version of a ‘Pop Idol’ is attracting more singers than ever, this year. The first Karaoke Idol was Paul Magill who impressed the judges with his rendition of the Blues Brothers’ famous Jailhouse Rock. Later he even performed professionally in JJ’s as part of a Blues Brothers tribute. Having become exceedingly popular, the singing talent now streaming-in is getting more sophisticated by the year. Judges are seen even giving advice to the participants. “They listened to advice and we all found it great entertainment. I’ve been involved one way or another in Karaoke for over 15 years and I’ve seen some great singers and some pretty awful ones,” says Steve Green, a former judge at the competition. “Karaoke Idol is ‘sing-sational’! It’s the social highlight of the karaoke calendar that should not be missed.” This is a competition for amateurs only. Entries from professional vocalists will not be accepted.
