It is a modern Western form of belly dance which was created by fusing American tribal style belly dance and American cabaret belly dance. It frequently incorporates elements from popping, hip-hop, Egyptian or cabaret belly dance, as well as movement principles from traditional forms such as flamenco, kathak, odissi and other folkloric and classical dance styles. The first part of class is devoted to allocation movements on the skeleton while the second is devoted to the smooth elements and the last section deals with choreography. This year’s annual show from Victoria Dance takes fashion as its theme to come up with a performance featuring all things mod. From Dedicated Follower of Fashion to Blue Suede Shoes the organisers have gone all out to find fashion-themed music and choreograph showcase dance pieces around them. With 150 dancers from three years upwards, including some enthusiastic mums, all taking to the stage for this bumper performance, this promises to be a real fun, feelgood event. Be ready for a bit of controversy from Kunal Kamra, whose standup act tackles issues such as patriotism and the government in today’s India – he has even been asked to move out of his home due to his involvement in political issues, so he probably has a lot to say! Rahul Subramanian is also a controversial figure, having received threats of violence from DJs who didn’t like his jokes!
