Bahrain This Month - June 2014

120 June 2014 www.bahrainthismonth.com When this restaurant launched in Bahrain, the founders knew that it would become a success. Today, they’ve been shortlisted for a regional award. The first Maki restaurant was conceived in 2002 on a side street in Kuwait with no more than 35 seats. This innovative Japanese fusion restaurant founded by Mohamad Zeitoun and his brother Amer became culinary history in the making. In 2010, after a few months of opening, Maki Bahrain was named Best Newcomer of the Year. Established with the idea of bringing Japanese cuisine to the Middle East in a palate-friendly manner, the venue has thrilled diners with the introduction of dishes like Amer Maki, Fusion Temaki and Tartufo Yaki Udon. Introducing ingredients unknown to Japanese cuisine, such as housegrown extra virgin olive oil, balsamic vinegar, foie gras and wild thyme, was something else that Maki single-handedly and exclusively pioneered in the market. This led the culinary haven to receive the best Japanese restaurant award less than two years later. Co-founder Amer Zeitoun says, “We believe in being part and parcel of the local fabric of this wonderful country, and that is why we strive to recognise the citizens that perfect their trade and put their positive marks on their community.” Maki went on with its philosophy of bonding with its community by collaborating with local celebrities. Hence, Bader Maki, Nour Maki, Alia Approved Maki, Amina Maki and Make Up Maki were introduced. Recently, Maki presented several healthful dishes that included ingredients that were introduced for the first time in Bahrain. The Red Tartufo Quinoa Salad and the exotic Kale Salad are the highlights. It’s no wonder that Maki Bahrain was recently shortlisted among a handful of regional venues to receive the best Japanese restaurant award by a reputable organisation. i Call 17 522-733 or email [email protected].
