www.bahrainthismonth.com June 2013 77 Paden Vaughan The latest Star Trek movie Star Trek: Into Darkness has Benedict Cumberbatch of BBC’s Sherlock playing the bad guy; we take a look at stars who’ve gone from TV to the big screen. It was much to the delight of Sherlock fans across the globe that 36-year-old Benedict Cumberbatch was selected to play the role of the villainous John Harrison in the latest Star Trek voyage — and with good reason! Cumberbatch has always been fantastic in the BBC series, which sees him play an updated, 21st century version of the famous Sherlock Holmes. His delivery in Star Trek was excellent, so it seems as if stardom is in the pipeline for the thespian. But the jump from the TV to the big screen is by no means unique to him; here’s a selection of stars who started small and made it big. Martin Freeman: (The Office; The Hobbit) It’s pretty crazy to think that Tim from The Office is now portraying Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy. The 41-year-old actor started his movie career with British comedies such as Love Actually and a cameo in Shaun of the Dead. He’s set to star alongside Sherlock partner Cumberbatch in this year’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Sacha Baron Cohen: (Ali G; Les Misérables) Hammersmith’s Sacha Baron Cohen has come a long way from interviewing celebrities and other deluded individuals with his many outragous personas in Da Ali G Show. As well as each of his characters having their own movie, he’s played various roles in movies from Hugo to Les Misérables. Johnny Depp: (21 Jump Street; Pirates of the Caribbean) This is a man who women across the globe, young and old, find insanely irresistible, yet who had pretty humble beginnings. He started off starring in cop series 1 Jump Street back in the 80s and became something of a teen icon. His first big break was with Edward Scissorhands, which skyrocketed his career and developed his partnership with Tim Burton. Depp has since gone on to perform in a huge range of movies from Pirates of the Caribbean to Alice in Wonderland. Mila Kunis: (Family Guy; Black Swan) She’s become one of the most recognised and admired (especially by teenage boys) actresses of her generation. But she’ll forever be known as Meg Griffin of Family Guy. Kunis still voices the character on the hit FOX TV show, but has gone on to appear in movies s uch as the critically acclaimed Black Swan and also this year’s Oz: The Great and Powerful. George Clooney: (ER; Oceans Eleven) Still appearing in polls ranking him one of the ‘Sexiest Men Alive’, Clooney has definitely come far from his first acclaimed role in medical drama ER. He’s since gone on to perform in a massive roster of movies, most notably Oceans Eleven, Twelve & Thirteen, and also Good Night & Goodluck. downtimeintro From Sherlock to Starfleet 78 Gadgets x 82 Tech Savvy x 87 Music x 88 Games x 89 Websites x 90 Apps x 92 Sattelite TV Also this month Gaming accessories As much as we love touch screens, sometime are fingers too clumsy for precision requiring games.
