Leading the Pack YUSIF BIN YUSIF FAKHRO Having developed many of the world’s firsts, the home appliance manufacturer Frigidaire is an industry pioneer. Not only was 1918 the birth of the first electric refrigerator but it was also the beginning of the company. WC Durant, the president of General Motors, purchased the manufacturing company that built the first self-contained electric refrigeration unit and coined its name. In 1929, Frigidaire invented the first commercially successful ‘room cooler’, or as we call it today, the air conditioner. This piece of technology subsequently transformed what it meant to be comfortable at home. In the same year, an ice cream cabinet was introduced that proved to have many more uses. From this innovation, the first home freezer was adopted. As early refrigerators tended to dry out fruits and vegetables, in 1930 Frigidaire developed the first Hydrator, a metal pan with a special ventilated lid. This kept humidity at just the right level for the produce, extending its freshness. Until 1947 the average washing machine was in constant need of monitoring as each part of the washing process had to be started by hand. The Pulsator Agitator washer fully automated the washing process so you could simply press a button, walk away and return when the wash programme was complete. Additionally, Frigidaire was able to reduce the size of the average cooker by 10 inches in 1950, while simultaneously offering the largest household electric oven in a cooker at the time. Today this 30-inch-wide cooker is still the standard in many countries. In 1965 the manufacturers designed the first ice maker in the refrigerator door. It froze, released and stored ice cubes automatically, making it easier to serve a cold beverage. The first laundry centre with a full-size washer on the bottom and full-size dryer above it was built in 1970. Its compact size is still popular with people who have limited space for their washer and dryer. The first built-in water and ice filtration system was introduced in 1996 through a Frigidaire side-by-side refrigerator. This feature is now so popular that you can hardly find a refrigerator without it.
