There are some intelligent ideas here, but for the most part this movie suggests that all your problems can be solved by shooting bad guys. After Earth Will and Jayden Smith both star in this post-apocalyptic action movie. In terms of visuals, it’s pretty impressive. But each line from the Smiths is sure to leave you cringing until you can bear it no longer. MOVIE OF THE MONTH Man of Steel RATING: DIRECTED BY: Zach Snyder STARRING: Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Kevin Costner, Michael Shannon THE PLOT: As his home planet is dying and being the first naturalborn child of many years, Kal-El (Cavill) is rocketed to Earth, where he’s found and raised by the loving Kent family (Kevin Costner & Diane Lane). Thirtythree years later, when the mendacious General Zod (Shannon) comes to Earth to seek the child, Clark Kent and Kal-El must rise from hiding and put his extraordinary powers to use. VERDICT: Zach Snyder has done a sterling job bringing Superman into the 21st century. While lacking the depth of Nolan’s Dark Knight movies it makes up for this with its action-packed melodrama. WORTH WATCHING? Superman is one of the hardest characters for an actor to really grasp; a guy who can literally defy gravity and is invulnerable to almost all forms of attack is never an easy person to assign a definitive personality to. Cavill’s Man of Steel is a character who seems as hardened as he is powerful, which makes him seem almost stiff and less tangible than Christopher Reed’s Superman. Overseen by Christopher Nolan of the Dark Knight trilogy, Zach Snyder’s portrayal of Kal-El’s origin is fantastic.
