ANKITA MAMGAIN From magnificent forts to desert adventures, incredible oases and sublime beaches, there’s much to fall in love with, in the sultanate of surprises. travelfeature When it comes to the Middle East, the image created by the media either involves a landscape of epic excess or a war-torn topography. However, a well guarded secret lies in the heart of the Arabian Gulf that is a treasure trove of tranquillity, innumerable natural wonders and boasts a thriving, multicultural urban centre with a soul that is soaked in centuries of history. The Sultanate of Oman packs in everything and more that you expect from a destination. Only an hour and 30 minutes away by flight from Bahrain, Oman is a fascinating land that has some of the most breathtaking scenery, warm and hospitable people and facilities and activities that suit travellers of all budgets. My first visit to the country was basically a weekend getaway, so there was not enough time to explore this massive country that encompasses several distinct geographical regions. These include Ruus al Jibal, which forms the northern most mountainous frontier, Al Batinah plain, the Oman interior comprising the Al Hajar Mountains and desert fringes; the coast of Muscat-Matrah, the offshore island of Masirah and finally the barren coastline south to Dhofar. My trip was confined to the Muscat-Matrah coastline, however having learned so much about the various ‘wadis’ and trekking trails and misty hill sides of Salalah, I am already planning my next visit. Magical Muscat My husband and I arrived in Muscat and were immediately taken by the eagerness with which people try to help. They greet you with beaming smiles and make it their own business to solve any problem of yours. I happened to enquire about something at the airport and soon there was a big group gathered around us discussing and debating at great length and trying to sort out our itinerary. Their advice was indeed helpful and, after thanking them, we sat in the taxi and headed towards our hotel. The first thing that strikes you about Muscat is how the modern developers of the city have embraced its history and culture with great sensitivity. The result is a city that is vibrant and modern yet looks rested, confident and wears its heritage with much pride. The Al Hajar Mountains border the city with their glorious silhouette accompanying you all the way to the centre. You do notice signs of globalisation with the occasional golden arches of McDonald’s, famous An Omani Escape Muttrah Souq 50 January 2016 www.bahrainthismonth.com
