Bahrain This Month - January 2014

January 2014 7 Dear Readers, Welcome to a new year! I have to say that I am looking forward to 2014, for a host of reasons — both personal and professional. My youngest daughter completes her last year at school in the summer, before embarking on the next chapter in her life. In April we will be celebrating the 200th edition of Bahrain This Month. Much of my time during the first quarter of the year will be spent on planning an event to match the occasion. It only seems like yesterday, rather than 1997, when we were putting together our plans for the magazine. Over the past year we have been investing in an expansion of our digital publishing presence and I am excited by the opportunities that this dimension will add to our business. In this issue, the first of these initiatives have come to fruition. A new section in the magazine, Back Seat Chat — in conjunction with Jaguar Land Rover and their distributor in the Kingdom, Euro Motors — delivers our first print-to-digital service. Alongside this, we are launching a brand-new website as well — MotoringGCC.com. Developed by Strategic Outsourcing Solutions, a division of Red House Marketing, the technology used by this site lays the platform for a transformation of our online activities in the months ahead. The first month of the year starts with a high as we preview the biannual Bahrain International Airshow. Running in parallel to this event is the Great British Week, from January 17-22. Packed full of activities to showcase Britain’s presence in the Kingdom, the week will highlight British engineering, innovation and culture. Celebrating their own milestone, the Bahrain Arts Society turns 40. To record this occasion we speak to a patron of the arts in the Kingdom, Sh. Rashid Al Khalifa, as he reflects on the arts scene and outlines his ideas for the future. The annual Al Aali Arts Fest also takes place this month, at the Al Aali Shopping Complex. The British theme continues as we interview the UK Navy’s top sailor based in the Kingdom, Commodore Keith Blount; additionally, our Downtime pages have a British flavour to them this month. The Motoring section includes our annual review of 2014 car models and there is a report on insurance and savings schemes as well. So, whatever you do this month, take time to enjoy the great way of life that the Kingdom has to offer. The team Publisher and Chairman George F.
