Bahrain This Month - January 2014

40 January 2014 www.bahrainthismonth.com happeningsclubssocieties The Kingdom’s social clubs and communities play a very important role in its calendar of annual events. Here’s how they give a vibrant start to the New Year. The Bahrain Keraleeya Samajam, together with the Indian Institute for Performing Arts, stages a celebration of Indian Carnatic music through the Nada Gandharvam festival on January 24. Multi-award winning singer Dr KJ Yesudas has been invited to perform at the Keraleeya Samajam Diamond Jubilee Hall. This is the third year Bahrain will host a Carnatic music maestro. In the past, legends like Dr Balamuralikrishna and Pandit Ramesh Narayan have performed in the Kingdom. Dr KJ Yesudas has recorded over 50,000 songs in scores of languages and is fondly called Gana Gandharvan, which translates to the celestial singer. For this show he is accompanied by Jayadevan on the violin, Thiruvarur Bakthavalsalam on the mridangam and Tripunithura Radhakrishnan on the ghatam. E Call 17 231-717. Celebrations Down Under The Australian and New Zealand Association of Bahrain is organising a gala barbecue brunch as part of their Australia Day celebrations on January 23. Observed annually on January 26, the day marks the anniversary of the 1788 arrival of the First Fleet of British ships at Sydney Cove. The Australian expatriate community is expected to gather in full strength at Intercontinental Regency Hotel Bahrain for this event, which includes a variety of native dishes, ales and entertainment. There’s also a coffee morning on January 21 at Organic Foods & Café in Seef Mall. E Call 32 054-862. Pongal Celebrations The Kingdom’s Tamil community rejoices this month as the Pongal festivities get underway. The Indian Club leaves no stone unturned in celebrating it with complete traditional fervour. The two-day event starts on January 16 when a number of cultural programmes take place at the club. These include several performances by local South Indian groups; the main act is by a group of artists that will fly in especially for the function. The next day is a grand feast open to all club members and their guests. The club expects nearly 3,000 people for lunch this day. E Call 39 660-475.
