Bin Mattar House A photographic journey into the Indian subcontinent goes on display at the Bin Mattar House in Muharraq from January 21. This vivid display, titled Inside India, is a unique amalgam of dramatic imagery and intimate emotions captured by Bahrain’s some of the most prolific photographers. Haya AlKhalifa, RashaYousif, Saji Antony and Stephanie Ravel bring their experiences and memories to life from their travels across the mystical land. A local sensation, and on his way to becoming an international name, catch Ala Ghawas live in performance at the Bahrain Fort Museum on January 30. Known for his folk sensibilities and soulful lyrics, his brand of music presents a perfect blend of east and west. Ala draws inspiration from artists like Bob Dylan, The Eagles and Jackson Browne. His latest recording project, Screams, comes after Hums and Whispers has received rave critical reviews. He collaborates with another Bahraini band, Likwid, for this show. E Call 17 564-654. When? January 9 and 16 | Event? Musical concerts | Venue? Qal’at al Bahrain site museum A celebrated musical group comes to town to strike perfect harmony against the glorious backdrop of this heritage site. The internationally-acclaimed Strauss Festival Orchestra (SFO) Vienna performs at the site on January 9 and 16. Founded in 1978 by Peter Guth, and Herbert Vedral, it has to its credit, countless appearances at significant music festivals, sensational TV concerts, tours around the world and CD recordings. The orchestra,famousfor its authentic interpretation of Viennese music in historical formations, offers a wide repertoire ranging across classics to their modern compositions. Boasting a contingent of outstanding musicians, the SFO Vienna is able to maintain its leading position ahead of similar ensembles. Peter Guth shares musical direction with concertmaster Willy Büchler, of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, who takes over the annual tours in Japan and New Year’s concerts.
