Bahrain This Month - February 2026

bahrainthismonth.com | FEBRUARY 2026 MOTORING 67 The first surprise is just how normal the E 53 can be. In comfort mode it glides along like a proper E-Class, smoothing out rough patches and making the everyday run to meetings feel effortless. Then you flick through the drive modes (with a push button on the steering wheel no less) and the polite saloon abruptly remembers it has an AMG badge. As my friends at the Mercedes-Benz Al Haddad Motors Showroom in Tubli aptly described: “It’s a complete beast” and, on an open stretch, it absolutely earns that reputation. Two personalities, one button This time, the hybrid story is more than a footnote. In fact, the title of ‘hybrid’ is finally official with both a petrol cap and an electric charger parallel on the vehicle’s sides. There’s a fully electric mode designed for real life, not just posturing. You can drive it on electric power alone for up to around 100km, which in Bahrain terms is a couple of days of commutes, school runs and coffee missions before you even think about petrol. It also means the quiet moments are genuinely quiet, with smooth, instant pull as you merge into traffic. When you do want fireworks, you get them. Under the bonnet is a 3.0 litre six-cylinder paired with an electric motor, delivering a punchy blend of effortless shove and instant electric response. Switch into Sport Plus and the whole car tightens up, the throttle feels sharper and the E 53 turns from calm cruiser to fast-lane mischief in seconds as it unleashes every ounce of its 604 horsepower. There’s even synthetic sound you can dial in, so the drama matches the mood even when you are not chasing high revs. Big screen energy Inside, it walks a clever line between luxury lounge and high-tech cockpit. The star of the show is the widescreen set-up across the dash, giving you that modern, cinema-like feel for navigation, media and vehicle settings. At night, it makes the cabin feel like a premium lounge on wheels, especially when you add the ambient lighting into the mix, and it can be tweaked exactly to your liking without ever having to take your hands off the wheel with a simple ‘Hey Mercedes’ voice command system. You still get the reassuring E-Class comfort, with a cabin that feels familiar and easy to live with, but AMG details keep winking at you: sportier displays, performance-focused steering controls and seats that hold you properly when you decide to stop behaving. There’s also a panoramic roof, perfect at this time of year to allow the winter sunshine in, making the whole interior feel lighter and more open. Outside, it looks the part without trying too hard. The styling is muscular and tidy, with sharp lighting, clean surfacing and those subtle AMG touches that signal performance without shouting. Practical touches like the flush door handles add to the sleek feel, while driver assistance features such as blind spot support, parking aids and 360-degree visibility tech make it far less intimidating to live with day to day. The real charm, though, is how easily it switches roles. One minute you are gliding along silently on electric power, the next you are in full AMG mode with the car egging you on. It is fast, yes, but also refined, comfortable and genuinely usable in Bahrain life, which is exactly what makes it such an appealing all-rounder. Scan to watch
